Alberta Rural Nursing Program

Published

I just thought I would introduce myself here and see if there are any other students at the level as I am.

I am entering the rural delivery BSN program in Hinton, Alberta in Sept/05. In the mean time I plan on taking as many of the courses by distance that I can so that my first year isn't so heavy. Right now I'm enrolled in Nurs 105 (Anatomy) through Grant MacEwan College (U of A transfer course).

I'd love to meet others waiting to get into their program.

PS. I'm a 31 year old mother of a 7 yr old boy and wife to a wonderful husband who supports me immeasurably.

You should check with Liz Anderson at Norquest about where your practicums will be. I know that most students have to go there (even from out of province). My mom's group had enough students in it to warrant finding instructors close by but I don't think they'll be running the program that way there again for awhile. You may have to travel ...

thanks for the info!! Keep in touch k?? Would love to know how things are going for you!!

My mom went through the program one course at a time. She completed it in 2.5 yrs. She didn't work throughout the program, but I know others who did. Everything was distance and then she went down to Kamloops for two of the practicums (7 wks and 5 wks). The last 2 practicums she did in her home town.
Just curious as to why it took her so long to complete the Norquest LPN courses? I am hoping to complete them all within a year? Hope that is possible. I am not working at the moment...so that might help but it is a very pricey course and I may have to go back to work just to pay for the bills. Just wondered how your mom found all the courses and if it could all be done in a shorter time than 2.5 years???. Thanks in advance. p.s. (oh and karen if your reading this post...how would you like a study partner via email? I understand you are just starting Norquest yourself. I am still waiting to hear if I am accepted ....let me know if you want to write. Would sure be fun to have some support while we wade through the trenches lol.

Hi ... the 2.5 years included the Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology prerequisite that you need before entering the program officially. The actual program was 2 yrs long for my Mom. She completed the course part time ... one course at a time. As far as I know this is the way the distance LPN course is run. Every course was in chronological order and had to stay that way ... that being said, I know there is a full time course being offered on campus at Norquest. The waitlist is huge! By the time you'd get in you'd be done the course through corespondence.

I don't know if I helped. Feel free to ask another question ...:)
