U.S.A. Alabama

Hey guys...I've been playin around with the idea of moving to the beach area eventually to live and work. I make many trips to G.S. and O.B. during the year and I absolutely love the area. I LOVE being near the beach and water. Does anyone have any info on the hospitals in the area and the pay rate and working conditions? Any info would help! Thanks soo much!!

Maybe Thomas Hospital? And isn't there a Baldwin County Medical also? I'm not sure what they have over there. Lots of folks live in Baldwin & work in Mobile. I know Providence & Mobile Infirmary pay better than Springhill. I don't know about USA Medical Center. Last I heard, either Mobile Infirmary or Providence was starting new grads at $18.75/hr +$1-2/hr for nights/weekends.

My DH is originally from Baldwin Co. and he has said the same thing....I want to be a CRNA eventually some day far off in to the future, LOL, so he thinks we can just live on the beach (have you priced THOSE houses?!) and enjoy life. Hey, I love the B'ham area though, but wouldn't mind having a condo some day around GS. :coollook: Even Fairhope where my MIL lives is a very nice town!

Matter of fact, we're heading to Destin for a week next week and I CANNOT WAIT!!! Gotta enjoy this summer while I can; school starts in August! Hope you're all going to enjoy it, too.

Sadly, Orange Beach & Gulf Shores took a big wallop from Hurricane Ivan. It is going to be a long while before they are the beautiful vacation arenas they were. :o

yeah very very sad...my bfs family HAD a condo and we went down last week to check it out....just awful...so much destruction..it was amazing how little justice all the pics on the news you saw did to the actual damage.

We live in Satsuma, AL, a small city 12 miles north of Mobile. We are one hour from the beach but live on Steele Creek. Nice area if you like to fish, ski, etc. with a private boat launch in our neighborhood and a free launch 2 blocks over. We are about 55-60 miles from Gulf Shores and go frequently. Living here you have several hospitals to choose from to work at - there's Mobile Infirmary, and other hospitals owned by Mobile Infirmary in different areas: Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, North Baldwin Hospital in Bay Minette (very up and coming area-small hospital), South Baldwin Hospital in Foley (small but very close to the beach), Infirmary West which used to be USA/Knollwood Hospital in west Mobile. There's also South Alabama Hosp (county/trauma hospital - large), and Springhill Medical Center (small-medium hospital) in the middle of Mobile, and lastly Providence Hospital in West Mobile (large). I just returned to work at Mobile Infirmary after having been gone for 10 years and starting pay for me (ADN) $23/hr. day shift. I graduated in 1990. I work in a day shift department, no weekends, no holidays, no nights but we do have a call rotation and we have to take call and we get call pay when we're on call. I haven't worked at all in 3 years, and for 12 years I worked in a physician's office. I only worked 2 years full-time in a hospital setting before going to the doctor's office and 2 years PRN in the hospital while working in the physician's office.

In our area where we live, it's probably one of the most affordable places in Mobile Co. to live where there are really nice neighborhoods, new houses, not a trailer park next door (no offense intended). We moved to Satsuma probably 14 years ago, have a 4 bedroom home that we paid less than $100k for. Of course property values have increased in this area.

If I had to live anywhere else, I would choose Bay Minette - very small nice community in Baldwin County - good public school system - and Mobile County definitely is not a good public school system in my opinion. We've kept our 3 children in private school until they reached the high school level and then they go to the public high school in our town. They have a small hospital there but it's not too far to commute to Mobile if you wanted to work at a larger hospital. Also Baldwin County includes Gulf Shores.

Hope this helps if you're interested in this area!
