  1. I went back to hospital nursing a little over a year ago after being in a physician's office for 13 years. Things had changed of course, including nurses wearing white scrub tops and either navy or white scrub pants. The tops are monogrammed with the hospital logo and your name. (The hospital pays for the monogramming). Three times a year we have a uniform sale put on by the auxillary. We can buy up to $300 and have it deducted from our pay check in 4 installments (I call it the "easy pay" plan). They make it convenient for us, the uniform sale lasts for 3 days and always does extremely well. I don't mind the white tops, I always wear navy pants and don't even own any white pants. You just have to get one of those Clorox Bleach Pens for the little stains you pick up (I keep it in my locker) - it works every time!
  2. Me too...but to each his own I say! My daughter wants to have her belly button pierced but it ain't happening while living in my home and I do check her belly frequently. No tattoos either. She's a pretty thin girl and we don't want any more attention drawn to her!! We want the boys to stay away for a while longer and it seems to attract boys to girls that have these piercings and tattoos. She's a good girl and we want her portrayed as a nice girl and stay that way!!
  3. I'm with you gooeyRN...Just have the 2 piercing on my earlobe and will occasionally wear studs in the top hole and a dangly pair in the lower hole when not at work. I am 42 years old and don't really care for any other type of piercings or tattoo. Patients always comment to me about other staff that have multiple visible piercings or tattoos and how unprofessional it looks. To each his own I say...but remember the patients and what age group they are in when you wear them. It's against our hospital policy to wear more than one set of earrings on the lower earlobe and they can't be large earrings. Patient's just don't like it.
  4. We live in Satsuma, AL, a small city 12 miles north of Mobile. We are one hour from the beach but live on Steele Creek. Nice area if you like to fish, ski, etc. with a private boat launch in our neighborhood and a free launch 2 blocks over. We are about 55-60 miles from Gulf Shores and go frequently. Living here you have several hospitals to choose from to work at - there's Mobile Infirmary, and other hospitals owned by Mobile Infirmary in different areas: Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, North Baldwin Hospital in Bay Minette (very up and coming area-small hospital), South Baldwin Hospital in Foley (small but very close to the beach), Infirmary West which used to be USA/Knollwood Hospital in west Mobile. There's also South Alabama Hosp (county/trauma hospital - large), and Springhill Medical Center (small-medium hospital) in the middle of Mobile, and lastly Providence Hospital in West Mobile (large). I just returned to work at Mobile Infirmary after having been gone for 10 years and starting pay for me (ADN) $23/hr. day shift. I graduated in 1990. I work in a day shift department, no weekends, no holidays, no nights but we do have a call rotation and we have to take call and we get call pay when we're on call. I haven't worked at all in 3 years, and for 12 years I worked in a physician's office. I only worked 2 years full-time in a hospital setting before going to the doctor's office and 2 years PRN in the hospital while working in the physician's office. In our area where we live, it's probably one of the most affordable places in Mobile Co. to live where there are really nice neighborhoods, new houses, not a trailer park next door (no offense intended). We moved to Satsuma probably 14 years ago, have a 4 bedroom home that we paid less than $100k for. Of course property values have increased in this area. If I had to live anywhere else, I would choose Bay Minette - very small nice community in Baldwin County - good public school system - and Mobile County definitely is not a good public school system in my opinion. We've kept our 3 children in private school until they reached the high school level and then they go to the public high school in our town. They have a small hospital there but it's not too far to commute to Mobile if you wanted to work at a larger hospital. Also Baldwin County includes Gulf Shores. Hope this helps if you're interested in this area!
