Hi all-
I am a nursing student with some concerns about how my past may be considered when trying to get my nursing license.
I have 2 issues that really keeping me from sleeping soundly at night:
A. I had an ex boyfrend that spitefully took a warrent out for my arrest for larceny when we broke up. At court he showed up with the biggest grin on his face and signed something to dissmiss the charges.
B. Once, I showed up late for court for a traffic violation. The presiding judge locked the doors so that anyone that was late could not get into court. As a result, a bench warrant was done for me for failure to appear for a traffic violation. This happened some years ago and all I can remember is some gross bondsman taking my picture and asking if he could keep it call me sometime.
This all happened during what I could easily describe as the worst year of my life. I had never been in trouble before (or after) and never knew that such silly things can keep you from getting your dream job.

hi, candygirl! welcome to allnurses! :welcome:
i just checked the alabama board of nursing web site. i checked their bank of faqs regarding criminal history and prior disciplinary action. the very first question it answers is "what type of criminal history should be reported on the application [for licensure]? answer: all arrests and convictions should be reported. this includes cases which were ultimately dismissed. . ." you can read this yourself at
http://www.abn.state.al.us/main/faq/faq-criminal.htm
if you don't have the court papers from both your arrests and case dismissals and adjudications you need to work on getting them. it is no different than getting medical records from prior healthcare providers. it is important you get the records with specific information on them before they are destroyed as a matter of regular purging of paperwork. you need to keep these papers forever along with your birth certificate, marriage certificate, will, etc., so you have them if you ever need to produce the specifics of these cases. the court clerks can tell you how to get this information. while the courts may have dates and titles of your arrests, they may not always have the specific paperwork that was generated at the time those cases were active. if the state board is asking for this information it might be possible that there are businesses in your state that will ask for the same information. you want to have it ready to copy and hand to them if that should happen in order for things to move along without delay.
this is the home page of the alabama board of nursing http://www.abn.state.al.us/welcome.html . you might want to check out some of the information that is there in order to answer any other questions you might have.
are you aware that you can probably collect any money that you are out of pocket in defending yourself from this idiot boyfriend's false claim against you? judy judy loves to rip apart people who file false charges against people. more than that, if his revengeful act costs you money (all the copying fees for the court papers to send to the state board?), you can probably sue him for it. imagine the grin on his face then. it won't look good on his credit report either. plus, it would add to the paperwork you'd be submitting to the board of nursing.
i don't think you have much to worry about except getting the legwork done for this. compared to all the felonies and misdemeanors out there, this stuff seems like really small potatoes to me. once this is all passed you, you will definitely feel much more relieved and able to sleep again.
Thanks for everything you said! I had no clue what to do. I never told my family about this because I was afaid of what they would think of me and my choices in life. I had been just repressing all this in the back of mind until I started to go nursing school.
