Airforce nursing critical shortage specialties?

Published

Hello,

Does anyone know what nursing specialities the US Airforce really needs?

I plan on going for my RN/BSN (accelerated program) and am thinking about joining the Airforce after graduation. This is a second career and I will be 40 years old upon graduation. However, it is my understanding that the airforce accepts nurses up to 47 years of age. If I know what specialties the Airforce really needs, I can focus on gaining experience in these areas.

Many thanks for your thoughts. Stephanie:)

I have a question for all of you active/prior service AF nurses. Does the Air Force take new graduates from BSN programs or do they have a minimum requirement for clinical hours prior to signing up?

The AF will take nurses right out of school. You will first attend COT (Commissioned Officer Training) school which is 4 weeks. After, that is the Nurse Transition Program which will take you through an orientation period which I believe is ~10-12 weeks long, then off to your first duty station.

My latest info was the AF doesn't accept nurses over age 35.

Actually now the air force accepts RN's with a BSN up until age 48. The above is a link to the website. Not sure when they started doing that or if they always did and just didn't disclose it. I know the Navy says 34 but I also know in reality they will do age waivers for nurses or doctors.
