Afraid of not being hired with just an ADN

Published

Hi all!

I'm currently in a predicament of sticking with my current school to earn a bsn in 4 years or attend an ADN program i was accepted in and graduate with my ADN in 3 years and then just completing my bsn soon after becoming an RN.

I'm worried about not being able to find a job as a new grad with only an ADN degree. However, my ADN program I was accepted into is part of a major hospital in my area that doesn't require a bsn for employment but does require you obtain your bsn within 5 years of hire.

What happens if I don't find a job within my first year of being an RN? When I complete my bsn, will I be considered a new grad once again and more marketable? I don't want to have the lack of experience and not be considered a new grad, and be up the creek without a paddle so to speak. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I think your "new grad clock" starts ticking once you've received initial RN licensure. As for the rest ... it's tough to predict what will happen in the future with regard to employment trends. If you're in a program that is affiliated with a hospital, you might have a better chance to find a job. All I can say is best of luck, whatever you decide!
