Advise for the LTC Supervisor

Published

Specializes in infection control, peds, home infusion.

I recently accepted a position at a local LTC facility as one of two 8a-4p supervisors. My background is primarily in med-surg, peds, and home health care, but I did work as 3-11p charge on a LTC unit as a LPN years ago.

I was wondering if you could post any sage advice for me? Anything that you might think is relevant to my success as a supervisor, as well as what to expect within a typical (or atypical) day. Another posterhas been kind enough to give me some advice, and now I would like to ask the rest of you as well.

Thanks so much!:wink2:

Head on over to the Geriatric Forum and skim thru that one and the one for DNS/ ADON...great posts.

First off, I would get a feel of what the floor is like. Work a few shifts on the floor. This would be helpful in that you haven't done LTC for a few yrs? A lot has changed (but still alot has stayed the same:D) I think this helps tremendously in that you get to know alot about the facility, residents, staff and what the routines are, what obstacles they may face in getting the work done......

Keep your eyes and ears open, listen to the staff (esp the CNAs) Man, you find out alot more from them and the residents than you would think.

Be fair and honest.

Do you know what your duties will be?
