I have applied at my local community hospital around 30 applications in the last 2 and a half years. After a year of applying and not getting even an interview I called admin and asked for feedback. She looked over the positions I was applying for and my application and said it all looked good and for me to just keep applying that theyget so many applicants. She then recommend I apply for the hospice aid position she just posted. I didn't find out for five months after the interview for that position that a friend of mine applied for it as well. I assume after I told her I applied. She had a few more years experience so I see why they chose her. However, the reason I found out she even applied and got hired was because she was using my shoulder to cry on after they fired her. Sometimes I wonder why they rely so heavily on experience when she clearly didn't work out. Several months later I got called for another interview they have a 3 part interview process. The admin interview went well and we walked down to the floor managers office. The floor manager loved me she even said don't tell on me but you got the job I think you are going to fit in great here with the other girls. She said I have two open positions and two candidates, me being one of them. She was attending a conference that weekend starting Thursday. The last step is the peer interview. They called me the next day it was a floor nurse and 3 PC T's. It seemed to also go well it was a little relaxed the girls were making jokes we were all laughing and most people I know that apply there say when you get to the peer interview you pretty much have the job. I waited a little over a week no rejection email and no phone call. I called the lady in admin that interviewed me and she said if we wish to persue you we will contact you. I didn't know what to think. That was just before summer. A few weeks later they called me for another interview a different floor it was also the same hiring manager that had suggested I apply for that hospice position. When she asked if I would come in for the interview I explained my confusion and she apologized and said if you get to the peer interview this time I will make sure you get some feedback. Well it never got to that level and I stopped really applying because I felt like I was begging for a job. I have been a GNA for 2and a half years working in a Long-term Care Facility. I am 34 years old and I had my kids first, four of them and then started a career when they were all in school. I am very good at my job. Its very natural for me to be a caregiver I don't cut corners and if I am taking care of your loved one rest assured they are in good hands. I also find a lot of the admin I interview with seem to think the patients at the hospital are more acute then what I see in the nursing home. Nursing homes are not like they were years ago. Its not all cupcakes, nail painting, card games and bingo. Because of insurance they don't stay in the hospitals anymore most people are in and out and shipped right to us. We have residents with IV's and wound Vacs most of them can't get out of bed and don't do much at all for themselves. I kind of just want to know any advise on where to go from here. Its really bothering me about that one interview I am starting to take this personal.
I wanted to add that I have also been back in school the past two years and I have 4 classes to finish and then I can apply for the nursing program. I had an excellent 2 year review at my current job. Not only do I have pct experience but I have life experience which I feel helped me become a better gna. I live in a fairly small town and have had all my children at this hospital and a good bit of experience there. I look at some of the staff and between being down right rude and a lack of competence I am like how in the world did you get past the door. I am not sure what the deal is if it were worth the money I would apply to one of the bigger hospitals in the city. John Hopkins is an hour away.
