Advice on post job shadow

Published

Specializes in Rehab, pediatrics.

I was interviewed last week for a position that I have dreamt of since sophomore year of nursing school but my area is so saturated that I could not get into the unit of my dreams and I basically took what I could for experience. I was so happy to have this interview but then I was even happier when the nurse manager asked me to pick a day to come in and shadow. (She did state she does this for most interviews to see if they actually like the unit and are a good fit). I didn't get my hopes up for this shadowing experience since she did state that she does this for most candidates before hiring.

So I ended up shadowing for 4 hrs this morning. I fell in love with this job even more with the shadowing experience. I asked questions about procedures and about the unit and hospital with the nurse I followed. I also was lucky enough to be invited to see a pretty cool procedure with the nurse manager. So after that procedure I let the manager know I was heading on my way out and she said that she still has a few more weeks until she will have an answer due to more shadowing to be done for the other applicants. She shook my hand and said you will definitely be hearing from me with a big smile.

So this boosted my confidence but at the same time I'm like man I don't want to wait that long to hear back and I'm also already thinking I didn't get it due to her telling me there are other applicants shadowing. I talked to my mother and she told me I probably did not get the job since I wasn't offered it on the spot. ( I know that a lot of places don't do that though in the hospital world)

But I was wondering, would it be weird if I sent a thank you note to the unit and then sent thank you emails to the nurse manager and the nurse I shadowed? Or should I send them all cards? Also should I send something else to the unit like fruits or flowers or something so I'm not forgotten? Or is that overkill?

I want this job so badly but I feel discourage with the feedback from my family member.
