Advice for UK RMN (soon to be RGN) move to the US

Hello all,

I am a Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse with 3 years' experience in highly specialised areas including acute, rehab, PICU and Mother and baby wards in the UK. I will be starting a 2 year Adult Nursing course in February which will make me dual qualified. After this, I am hoping to move to the US where I plan on marrying my US citizen partner and continue working as a nurse (ideally in the Psych field).

I have an understanding of the process of becoming a registered nurse in the US but wondered when I should start applying for everything? For example, will I have to wait till I am completely finished in my adult training course to start the CGFNS process? It makes sense to as it will break down all the hours studied etc. Also, when is ideal to look for a job given that I will be waiting 2 years till I qualify as a RGN?

Is there any advice that can be given with regards to when to apply for K1 fiance visa and how long this usually takes? I would really like to have a good timeframe on everything so I can make this transition as smooth as possible. Also, it would be really helpful to break down the costs for everything- although I understand this is a lot to ask for given my specific requests.

Note: I am aware that I still may be short on my hours on Obstetrics/Paediatrics but am hoping that my university will assist me in this.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

You will require complete transcripts so you can't start the process until you have completed course.

K1 visa I believe takes approximately 6-12 months but we don't see many post here that go that route
