Advice.. Non-nursing student, healthcare background - healthcare admin vs accounting degree

Published

Im in my early 30s and spent the last decade in healthcare on the patient care side. I started working as an EMT and then a patient care tech. Now i have 2 jobs, the latter one plus a part time one in patient registration. Im in a union that helps pay tuition and allowed me to go back to school.

At first i pursued the health science degrees like nursing, respiratory tech, etc. And realized they weren't for me and hard as hell to get into, it really stressed me out.

I made a switch to an accounting degree and so far I have no issues with the program at all. Everything clicks for me. I did an accounts payable internship last year. While it was boring office work, it felt safe not having to worry about psych patients wanting to punch you in the face or make false allegations, etc. Anyways, im graduating next year.

Im just wondering if i made the right career choice or if.i.should have went for something like healthcare administration degree (not "nursing" administration) being that im already in healthcare (but then again accounting can also be applied to healthcare let alone anywhere). Or am i over thinking it?

The manager who hired me for my 2nd job told me i could use accounting to get into health care revenue.cycling.

I was thinking as a back up that i could get certified in medical billing and coding after finishing the accounting degree, which may look good together(?).

Any opinions/thoughts?

You probably want to visit the career services office or an advisor on campus to give you guidance. Also, you use the title of nurse in your username so may want to modify it here on the nursing forum.
