Hi all. I am an LVN in so cal looking to get into the home health area but have no idea where to start. Are most home health jobs visits or one on one? Does HH pay decently? Are there certain agencies to go through? Any and all advice on HH would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Are you a new grad or do you have some experience?

I have been an LVN for 2 years now and worked in the LTC setting. Looking to see if HH is better (or better different) and will be able to get me to days as I have worked nights this entire time.

As far as the pay, it depends on whether your client has private insurance or Medicaid/Medicare. Private insurance pays well. The other does not. It takes a long time to establish yourself too. At first you will probably do fill in type work. Then you will get a case and work that client full-time.

Your line of expertise is different than mine. So as to your day/night question, I don't know. For me, the babies I take care of, need night nurses. I really like 11p-7a. I can stay awake till 12:30p and wake up at 8pm. That way I have some daylight hours. I figure that working nights is no different than working days because for those hours that I work, I can't be with my family anyway. I like the peace and quiet of nights. I feel like I am doing excellent nursing with one on one care. The day shifts are not as easy as you think. The family members have a tendency to hover. This doesn't happen at night.

Hope that helps some. I don't live where you live. So things may be somewhat different. What I have shared here is probably somewhat applicable.

Thanks for your help. Are you with an agency? Is it difficult to get in with an agency?

I do work for an agency, yes. Where I live, this agency was the only place in medicine willing to give me a chance. I have submitted, conservatively, 100 applications to hospitals here and turned down over and over because I haven't worked in 18 years. I had 10 years experience before that, which to them means nothing.
