Advice on Hospice Services

Published

Hi Everyone,

Firstly my apologies if this is the wrong place to post this but I haven't been able to find ANY information online and was hoping someone here may be either able to help or at least point me in the right direction.

I'm a RN from Australia who several years ago changed career and now work as a Flight Attendant for an Australian airline. In my travels I have made friends with a California girl (Orange County) who is currently having a really difficult time with (her best friend) who has a cerebral tumour. Without wanting to bore you all with the full details, from what I can tell the friend although not end stage is quite unwell - she suffers with periodic confusion and disorientation and frequently has trouble with self medication.

At present she is living with my friend in a one bedroom apartment which she also shares with her daughter and the situation seems quite untenable both in the short and long term. The friend possesses NO medical insurance and what I was wondering / hoping was if someone might be able to tell me what kind of services might be available for her? In Australia as we have global health care you would simply turn up at your local hospital whereby (even if just for social reasons) they would arrange admission and then future care. I know the US system is somewhat more complex but ??? surely something must exist to assist people in such circumstances.

ANY advice would be so greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Is the person eligible for Medicare?

See if she qualifies for Medicaid.

There are some volunteer based inpatient facilities, she may be able to stay at one or at least take advantage of respite opportunities.

Also try calling local and county social services.
