Adult or Peds?

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

I just became certified as a CNA. I feel drawn to work in peds, but I'm wondering if I should start out working with adults to gain experience or whether I should just jump right in to working with children.

Is it better to master my skills while working with adults or should I go into peds?

This really depends on where you want to go in general. If you are using this experience as a stepping stone to be in nursing school then I will say this: wherever you end up working as a CNA is like a long interview for an RN position. I know CNAs and MAs and even EMTs that are in nursing school and their supervisors are already asking them to come work as RNs once they graduate. If you're using the CNA job to get into a graduate program like MD or PA I do not think it matters which population you start in as long as you are getting hands-on clinical hours. As far as just beginning a CNA job just to have a job then I would say go where you want to go. Once you have established yourself with a unit you can always float to other floors or move to another floor. Peds vs adults will be different though especially if you are on a postpartum floor vs a MICU or med/surg. Hope this helps!
