ADN's in Seattle?

Published

I am getting ready to start nursing school and I think I have decided on the ADN program at Seattle Central CC. My reasons for choosing this route are the relative ease of getting in (compared to UW, where I have a BS in Public Health) and the cost. I'm wondering what the experience of some of you ADN RN's has been getting jobs in Seattle. Have you had trouble without a BSN? I'd also like to know about any hospitals in the area that help pay for ADN-BSN programs or Masters programs. I read in another thread that UW takes applicants to their Masters program who have only a BA+ADN, so I think that is my best option a couple years down the road. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Alex,

I'm at about the point you were when you posted this. I have a BA (in art = lots of prereq fun) and am trying to get into nursing school in the Seattle area. I think the Seattle Central CC program is really appealing; just wanted to see if you ended up choosing it. With their first-come, first-served policy, did you have to be on the Program Ready List RIGHT at January 15? I'm just asking b/c their guidelines state that you cannot get on the list until all 6 prereq's are complete. I have one left but won't have it done until March (still within their deadline, but not sure if they'll have room). I just wondered how it worked out for you and if you had any advice.

I hope school's going well for you!

I have heard from a few nurse friends of mine that if a hospital sees that you went to SCCC they will not hire you because the program is not looked at as a desirable school when it comes to hiring. I have heard that nurses that grad from their work at nursing homes due to this... I am not 100 percent sure that this is true, but first come first serve does not sound like a competitive program.

the rumor that local seattle hospitals do not hire students from sccc is simply not true. i graduated from sccc about a year ago and several of us were hired right out of school in to residency programs at harborview, virginia mason, swedish, overlake, evergreen, valley medical and the va. in fact our employment rate after passing nclex was 100% (also 100% passed nclex on the first attempt). i personally got hired right out of school into an ed residency program in tacoma. sccc has several clinical rotations at local seattle area hospitals, which provides for excellent opportunities to make connections to land a job after graduation. btw working as an rn in a nursing home is admirable. these nurses provide a very valuable service to our geriatric population and i find it sad when they are looked at as 2nd class nurses.

Total BS about not hiring from SCCC. I work with equal number ADN vs BSN RN's (I'm an ADN) and they come from all community colleges in the Seattle area. I have never heard of anyone not getting hired because they went to one CC as opposed to another. Sheesh.

Dear Rainsun,

A word of caution: if you took your prerequisites elsewhere, it can take up to two months for them to complete transcript evaluation. Follow up on it because they have lost my friend's evaluation. Then another word of caution: do not send in your application via federal express, overnight mail, or any way other than the regular post . How do I know this? Nancy Harris, the program assistant, told me that applications sent this way are rejected. I was in my 3rd quarter last year when I withdrew due to illness. I have much more information about the program if you want to know.....

Hi Ardentanglophile,

Thank you for the advice. That's awful about your friend - and interesting about not using FedEx, etc... How did you like the program? I'm not able to apply until have the pre-req's finished - which will still be w/in the application deadline, but I'm pretty sure there won't be any more room in the program. Have you been able to get back into the program? Do you mind if I ask where else you applied?

Thanks!

Well I thought the program was not so good...Truthfully, I would rather send you a private email with the details because I do not want to offend the other posters who graduated from there because it is true that their pass rate is high and graduates do get hired. My gpa is only 3.5. Not good enough for most of the schools around here. I applied to SCCC and didn;t think I would get in but they notified me in JULY!!!! ( that is the first time I got in..sorry if not clear). I am working on getting back in the program although I think it is down right silly to have only 3 year expiration date for prerequisites...I am scheduled to start in Sept at Skagit Valley but its a 63 mile drive one way, so I am weighing the cost of gas/daycare, with redoing my prerequisites to enter SCCC again... Look up my profile and send me a private message if you want more details.

I agree, I think that the 3 year expiration date is wrong. Let's say for example, you finished all your prerequisite and then went the LVN route first instead of going straight for your ADN. By the time you get your Nclex as LVN and would want to continue to Getting your RN your prerequisites would be expired? Is that right?
