Hello, I am an ADN Nursing student and am having difficulty in student clinical setting, in particularly in a medsurg  or ICU setting. As much as I do not mind doing things by myself, I certainly do not want to make mistakes, such as with passing medications. However, when I ask a question, I have been given an attitude by the nurse precepting me, such as "What do you need? You always need something..." or if I do not ask a question I am given an attitude such as "Why didn't you ask me??" So... either way I seem to look like a dumbass... Anyway, how do I move forward and continue to learn in a clinical setting? I do know that the priority are the patients. I am a CNA. When is it acceptable to ask questions? When should I be independent and perform the duties by myself?  I submitted my topic here, because I figure I might get a better response from nurses who been through nursing school or nursing instructors. TIA

First of all, congratulations!  Ask the nurse in the future when you can ask questions.  Anyway,  you need to stop taking them personally. I'm not saying that you should accept abuse. If you sense something negative, pull back a little bit and go do something else that you're allowed to do by yourself.  Always ask your school or clinical instructor first.

You will be independent when you passed your NCLEX-RN. You won't be alone. You will always be supervised by another nurse. For other nursing skills, they'll let you know whether you can do them alone or not.

Focus on your big prize!
