  1. Hello, I am an ADN Nursing student and am having difficulty in student clinical setting, in particularly in a medsurg or ICU setting. As much as I do not mind doing things by myself, I certainly do not want to make mistakes, such as with passing medications. However, when I ask a question, I have been given an attitude by the nurse precepting me, such as "What do you need? You always need something..." or if I do not ask a question I am given an attitude such as "Why didn't you ask me??" So... either way I seem to look like a dumbass... Anyway, how do I move forward and continue to learn in a clinical setting? I do know that the priority are the patients. I am a CNA. When is it acceptable to ask questions? When should I be independent and perform the duties by myself? I submitted my topic here, because I figure I might get a better response from nurses who been through nursing school or nursing instructors. TIA

Hello, I am possibly interested in becoming a Certified Diabetes Educator. I have a general idea on the route to it, but would like some idea on pros and cons of that area, (other than pay and benefits). As an example, are what are the stress levels like working as a certified diabetes educator.. Thanks in advance,
  3. Hello, I am in an ADN program out in California and am possibly interested in becoming a certified diabetes educator. I have a general idea on the road map of becoming one, but am interested (outside of the pay scale) in the pros and cons of being a certified diabetes educator. As an example, stress levels compared to being in a med surg unit.... Please advise.. Thanks
  4. Hello, I am looking at possibly becoming a Nurse Nutritionist. I have some questions to ask. 1) Is there an organization for nurse nutritionists? 2) What is it like to be a nurse nutritionist? 3) What are nurse nutritionists called? 4) What are the steps to become a nurse nutritionist? The reason I am thinking of becoming a nurse nutritionist is because I feel like I am actually helping clients improve their health. I did do the Google thing and could not find much.
  5. Hi I’m a nurse assistant and I want to go for either nursing or radiology tech or pa or speech therapist. TBH I grew as an abused child where my mom tried stuffing my face with a pillow amongst other issues I had. Yes I have some ptsd. I am five years as a nurse assistant with most at va. They were nice and I tried to help but could not give me part time so I went to another hospital only lasted three months. I left after three months because I felt helpless most importantly as I was ignored and almost threw my back out doing patient pull-ups by myself and turns by myself. While doing all this in the middle of my tasks I was dumped with three or four different tasks on me including sometimes two people needed to go to the bathroom at the same time. Could not ask for help because no one would pick up. I left because I felt helpless and abused. I have offered to help them too. Trying to get back into va but no answer. Are hospitals and facilities mostly like this? What’s it take to be a nurse or cna if this is the case? Patients were demanding too because they had to wait. Please advise!
  6. They did by saying time management. What I don’t understand is why the nurses could not approach me but rather tell the manager. It seems like they are also eyeballing me.
  7. Hi everyone. I’m in a bit of a pickle. I recently left the va hospital after 4.5 years as a nurse assistant to go part time as a nurse assistant at el Camino hospital. I was doing this to take classes. After a month at el Camino hospital I got written up or coached as they called it for not taking initiative. Now I’m a good helper but why didn’t these people come to me and tell me personally. Anyway I feel like I’m also being eyeballed from people to make sure I’m perfect! I’m thinking about going back to VA hospital or somewhere else! Any suggestions or ideas or thoughts? Sure could use some help! I seem unwelcome at el Camino .
  8. I work in a med surg unit. I have been here two years. Sometimes I don't get help. I can do the skills taught in school but struggle with independent prioritizing in tasks and situational thinking. I need help with this. Please advise!! Nurses sometimes get upset when they are not first..
  9. I work in a med surg unit as a CNA. I struggle with independent prioritizing and figuring out situations. How do I do this? Sometimes when the floor is busy asking for help is not an option especially when it comes to turning patients. Not always is there guidance. I wish there was.
  10. I'm having trouble with on how to work independently as a CNA. I'm trying to be a nurse. How do I work independently? How do I ask for help? When do I take initiative? I'm trying to do this without pissing some doctor or nurse off... I've done the above but sometimes someone gets pissed off. Very frustrating..
  11. I am just curious what are the nursing priorities? I work in an acute care hospital as a CNA. The other day I was trying to pull up a heavy patient that could not pull himself up ( tried trendelenberg) and called for help. The nursing assistants were busy with vitals and said they would help me later so I asked the nurse and told him the Na's could not help because they were busy. He told me he could not help either right now.. He was on the computer at close to start of the nurses night shift... I felt sorry and bad for this patient who was not sitting in a comfortable position... No one else was to be found... What can I do? It seems as if the nurses want help from me and I cannot get help from them sometimes... No codes or emergencies were going on...what can I do?
  12. Ok... Sorry my last question was not detailed enough... Here goes.. i had a couple of difficult patients yesterday... One did not want to have me perform an ekg on him.. I thought he would not lay down because he was heavy in size but did not realize until 30 mins later when I just finished the ekg that he was scared when the other nurse told me.. I did it eventually... Another patient who who normally does not resist started resisting when I needed to clean because he had a vowel movement... He did not want to do it because he said he was cleaned 2 hours ago and wanted to sleep.. I told him I had to because of skin breakdown... He ignored... I went to the nurse and explained to her what I said to him and the situation and told her I did not know what to do... She seemed to look at me weirdly and told me it had to be done.. We went in together because she had to give her m meds and she explained to him the same thing I said and he agreed... I dont understand what what I am saying or doing wrong... how i.e. do I effectively communicate? I cannot bother the nurses because of getting to know the patient and passing medications... At that time... What do I do and say to the patient and nurse? i was a teacher in a public school for ten years... It shouldn't be much different.. I am a nurse assistant certified..
  13. I am a he by the way....
