ADN/BSN army reserve deployment Q's

Published

Hello all,

I would like to go in the army active duty but need to complete my BSN first. I can join the reserves with ADN and was wondering if they would deploy me while I was still in school, not the 2 weeks a year thing, but for a year or more. I would like to do reserves until I'm done with my BSN, but my concern is how to finish it if they deploy you. So is there any preference for BSN reserves or would I stand the same chance of going?

Thanks!

Hi Frank. I'm acutally considering going that same route. My DH is a SFC in the Army, an ex-recruiter, and one of his buddies is acutally a reservist med. recruiter, so I will DEFINATLY ask and find out about how deployments would work while trying to get your BSN. As soon as I get a moment with him, I'll ask him and see if his buddy has an answer for me as well. I've not thought about that and would like to know myself.

I'll keep you posted....

I would be interested in info also. I am not in great shape but am interested in the reserves. Any tips?

True, I'd love to go in and hopefully make some rank before going active, and the school stipend is awesome, just want to make sure I can finish my BSN before they ship me out.

Thanks for all your input!

Hello,

I am not sure how your school schedule for BSN completion would work regarding deployments. Possibly it needs to be a part of your contract? Here is a link I read on another board regarding Reserve and Gaurd deployment information which was just updated.

i would def. advise you to finish your degree before commisioning. im not pos if everything is the same for officers, but as an enlisted personell in the army ng, they have no compassion when it comes to getting our degees finished. we are at the needs of the army . they could call us at any time. think, what if you only has one semester left before you finished your degree and you had to deploy for a year. they would most likely make you go and put you way behind in your classes.

this is just my experience in the national guard im sure reserves is the same. you can always use the loan repayment either way. just dont do something you will regret, talk to other army pple besides recruiters. sometimes they will throw in little white lies to get you in so they can get there little promotion or something like that. good luck to you

Hello Armygirl,

I agree with you. It seems to me that a reserve Army Nurse officer will deploy regardless of their outside education pursuits, (reserve commissions nurse officers who do not have a BS academic degree as long as they do have their RN license).

Currently I am enrolling in an outside education effort and the University knows that it could happen that I will deploy in the middle of my program. So, my program will have to wait for me, thankfully since it would be for a deployment, the university will hold me seat in place and I should loose no cost of registration or anything, (only the time, the year or 15 months or whatever the length will be then).

The only way I think they would not deploy is if their contract is not a reserve officer but the student program which pays the stipend for them to complete their BS for Active duty or as an ROTC which also recognizes their student status.

Hope the OP updates, its been a few months now.

I was also curious about the differences in AF vs Army reserves as a nurse. Any help would be great. I do understand that the AF does not accept ADN's but what are the bennifits of AFR over AR?
