Admissions Essay and HIPAA

Published

Hi everyone!

I am currently working on my admissions essay, and I wanted to talk about my experience as a CNA, and the first time that I experienced a patient dying. I wanted to start off my essay in a report format (for example: 43 year old male admitted after surgery), but I don't want to violate HIPAA in any way. Obviously I wouldn't use any identifying information like name, facility, room number etc, but I just don't want to take any risks.

Thanks for all your help, and reading this :)

That doesn't sound very concerning from a HIPAA angle ...but it seems like an odd subject for an admissions essay. I'm imagining that you're either some sort of hero in the story, or that the person's death becomes all about you in some other way. It seems almost anti-nursing since nursing is supposedly "patient centered".

Anyway, I think you're safe. I'm so glad I never had to write one of these things, because I have no idea what I would write about.
