Has anyone had to write an essay on why they want to be a Nurse? One of the schools I am applying to requires this. Any ideas on how to word this essay other than the norm of saying to help people this is something a Nursing school probally always reads.

yes, i did on one application. i wrote a lot about my family full of nurses. i have literally been surrounded by the medical field since i was born lol. so i wrote that it just kind of rubbed off on me. i tried to stay away from the "to help people" reason, even though wanting to help people is a very good reason :wink2:

I had to write 4 of them for 4 different schools. Make sure to look at the programs in depth and touch on points of the program that stand out to you and your interests/situation. As well as drawing examples from real world nursing situations. I looked up web page on the internet, such as a day in the life of an er nurse, oncology nurse, hospice nurse. These articles give you real life insight of what a nurse deals with, and what being a nurse really entails. This helped me alot to be able to express my reasons for wanting to be a nurse. I also not only had to write these essays, but I have ADD and made sure to include a personal essay on myself! So far I have been accepted directly into 3 out 4 of the programs I applied too! But the one I really want to get into, I am waiting to hear, back from. I found the program that fit me the best last! LOL
Good Luck, and Hope this helps!

The main focus of your essay should be on "the truthful answer to the question." Anything else will sound false. So ... Lots of professions "help people" as you put it. What it is about nursing that appeals to you more than those other helping professions? Start making a list of those things about nursing that make it seem more appealing to you than the other helping professions. Also list those things that make you believe that nursing will be a "good fit" for you.
Write your essay based on those lists -- throughing in some concrete examples and personal stories to "sell" your ideas and help you to stand out as an individual in the minds of the reader.
