Admission Assesment RN for a Nursing Agency

Published

Can someone tell me what exactly an Admission RN does? Recently, I was approached by one of my church members who owns a nursing agency asking me if I want to work for her company doing admission assesments. She said she pays $100.00 for each admission assessment and $50.00 for follow ups...Now, I'm not exaclty sure how it works but the pays sounds good. So, does anyone here knows what it is and what the responsibilities are? Thanks..

We used an Admission RN in a previous agency where I worked. Basically that nurse was assigned to opening new cases only, then the patients would be assigned to a case manager. Her schedule consisted of doing 3 openings one day, 2 a day for the next 2 days, .....they basically alternated her schedule like that to give her a chance to complete the paperwork. She was paid hourly. The $100 per opening sounds pretty good if they could keep you busy enough and if you were able to keep up with the paperwork. Admission visits can often take quite a long time to complete, depending on patient's diagnoses and treatments, etc, so you'd have to weigh whether it would be worth it. Myself, I'd probably give it a try for $100 per visit. That's quite a lot more than we get here for openings. The follow ups are those visits that require a "renewal" of sorts of paperwork, OASIS, info to Medicare. They are usually not as extensive as an opening, but do take a bit more time than a regular visit. I hope that info helps you. Good luck!

what is OASIS?

It is definitely going to take you more than one hour to complete the assessment and do the paperwork. More like several hours, especially if you have never done one before and are not familiar with the paperwork. It is much more extensive than what you do for a patient admission assessment in the hospital.

So, the $100 may be more like about $30 per hour by the time that you are done. Home Health requires extensive paperwork, etc. That is why most HH nurses try to get padi by the hour and not the visit, when you are doing this type of work.

At our agency we pay a per diem rate of $75 per admission on the weekend. An admission is a lengthy visit 1-1 1/2 hrs long, then follow up paper work and phone calls. Depending if the agency is computerized or not will also effect the amount of time. Once trained and have some practice time, the total amount of time should be 2 1/2 to 3 hours. An OASIS is an assessment tool that is aprox 16 pages long that looks at patient health status, ADL status and family support. It sounds overwhelming, but it really isnt.
