And Epi 100 is TOUGH!!!

Take it somewhere else or take the N50 course.

What is the N50 course? Im worried...I just signed up for the one at UCLA summer school and they say it counts towards our GPA...

Could I ask you what exactly is meant by bedside nurse? You said in the other blog that UCLA just prepares you to be a good bedside nurse and that is it. I know it is not an APN program but we can come out and work in any area of the hospital right? Would you have gone somewhere else if you could do it over?

I think I need more experience to know for sure but right now I am interested in prenatal, birth and delivery, or OR...After school you can pick to work in one area right?

Last year the SON offered an epi classe (N50) which was reportedly waaaaaaaay easier than the Epi 100.. It costs the same & you should be able to easily switch your enrollment.

Nursing 50 vs. EPI 100? I just spoke with Shelli and she mentioned that the nursing school accepts the Nursing 50 course which would meet the EPI 100 requirement. I think I prefer to take that course. I don't want to start off on the wrong note by taking a really tough EPI 100 class.

Can we go ahead and register for that right now? Is the course in the $800 range too? That seems exorbitant.

FYI, Just to chime in...as I had applied to UCLA, I took Epidemiology last Fall to get it over with, at Cal State Fullerton (as a CSUF Extension student). The cost is $210 per unit so it worked out to a little over $600 and I really enjoyed the course. It was taught by Dr. Vincent Merrill, but I'm not sure if they offer a summer session. I would highly recommend it if anyone is considering taking it there. :) Good luck!

hmmmm what should I do? any suggestions? I know you said Epi 100 is tougher but I also want to learn as much as I can..Do they go over more? What is tough about it? Is it impossible? Is it because it is a summer class and everything is too condensed or .....could you tell me a little more? Do they go over the same stuff in the N50? Do you feel like you know more after taking Epi rather than the N50 course? Let me know....Thanks

You can take Epi at many different colleges, UCLA pre-req page lists several classes offered at different Cal State schools as possible alternatives. Here is a link if you want to hear the intro to UCLA's epi 100 and see the course outline etc.

I have been accepted into the next MECN class too, but am leaning toward CSULA as it seems a better tailored fit for what I want to do.

csula is just off of the 10 freeway east of downtown. i don't think it is too bad of an area (but i might be wrong). the campus seems to be pretty secluded from the nearby neighborhoods.

i have gone to the campus a few times. it doesn't look like a great part of town, but not bad either. the parking is very convenient, and there is a metro and/or bus stop right across the street from the building where the nursing classes are located.

i really liked the campus--it has a homey feel. it is not plush like ucla, but it is definitely good.

You guys:

Don't freak out!!!!! I took Epi 100 for my public health degree and it was not bad at all. Most public health classes are very general. You don't have to remember tiny details. Take the 100 course so that you can get a REAL notion of what Epi is. Don't take the N50 course just because people say it's easier. TRUST ME, if you got into MECN, then you have what it takes to get an A (or at least a B) in Epi. I have the reader for the course and I'd be happy to give it to you so you can get started ahead of time. You're all big time now and if you think Epi 100 is going to be hard, then you should get prepared for advanced pathophysiology and pharmacology...that requires more study time (WWAAYYYY MORE) than Epi 100. My med student boyfriend agrees. He took Epi 100 and also taught the nursing students. Epi is a GREAT foundation and I think it's a must! Who's teaching Epi in the summer? I may know the professor. If you take the course and need tutoring, you got me and my boyfriend to help you out...just chill!!! I'll be done with prereqs in June, so I'm relatively available over the summer.
