Accepted or Not? Conditionally Accepted?

Published

Hi all I'm a little confused and I'm hoping someone will know or have an idea as to what this means.

I was all excited and nervous, today was my appointment to apply for a change in cirriculum at my school for Fall 2009 from General Studies w/ Concentration in Nursing to RN Program. So I went and met with the counselor and she checked that I had a valid Biology grade B- (need "C" or higher) and checked that my GPA was high enough 2.9 for RN program, 2.67 overall (need 2.0 to get in to RN) and she also saw that I am already signed up for A&P I for September. So all is looking good for me at this point. Then I asked her if I was pretty much guaranteed a spot for Fall 09 and she said she wouldn't guarantee anything b/c many things can happen between now and then. She proceeded with examples of how student came to her and said they had a death in the family and they wouldn't be attending, or how their DH lost his job and they need to work and can't attend, or how the student is suddenly pregnant and can't attend. So I said, o.k. that is understandable. She then proceeded to tell me that next January I would be meeting with a Nursing Division advisor to set my schedule for Fall 09 and that since I am on a waiting list for the Fall 09 (they haven't begun accepting people into the program yet so everyone is being wait listed at this point), that she would be monitoring my grades and GPA at the end of Fall 08 and Spring 09 to make sure that I haven't fallen below the program GPA or overall GPA of 2.0 or had a semester that I didn't attend the school. She handed me this little form and at the bottom there is a box for hand written comments. In the box she has Human Biology, the course code and "B-", then she has GPA 2.9, and finally this comment "Student needs to remain at the college and have courses scheduled for Fall 08, Spring 09, and Fall 09."

So I get home and tell DH and after hearing myself tell the story I found myself confused, am I or am I not getting in to the program? She made it sound like she is proceeding as if I am accepted by "monitoring" my grades and GPA yet she wouldn't guarantee that I will get in. She also made it sound like it would be me that would notify them that I wouldn't be attending but not like they would notify me that I haven't been accepted. She did say that I would get "a" letter once they have started to accept the students for the Fall 09 but did not say if it would be an acceptance letter or a rejection. Initially after I left the appointment I was thinking that I was in that I had to worry about now was getting through the program but like I said, once I heard myself telling the story to DH I started to feel confused at to whether I am being accepted or not.

Can anyone help me interpret this? Do you think I am accepted or not? Could I be conditionally accepted with the condition being that I keep attending until the program will officially begin for me in the fall of 09? I was going to start looking into scholarships for fall 09 to help pay expenses but now I'm not sure if I can apply for any or not.

ugh, now I know how everyone feels when they are anxiously waiting to find out if they have been accepted or not.

I think you should call your counselor and ask for some clarification.

It sounds like (to me) that you have been placed on their waitlist. They are advising that you complete these classes to fufil the pre-req requirements. If a spot becomes available they will go down the list of students that are currently waiting and offer them a spot. I am not sure what pre-req's are required to start the RN program at your school but with the schools in my area they required all the A&P,Micro,Chem,Nutrition,Psychology,Algebra and English.

Just to be safe I would call or e-mail for some clarification.

Sounds like to me that you meet their qualifications but they have not started accepting students formally yet. So I would wait for a leter and I would call now to get clarification as to the deadline of when you might recieve that letter.

Thanks so much, that is a great idea. I will call and find out when they will begin admitting students for the fall 09 program.

The woman did say that fall 08 is already full and there are people waiting for acceptance for fall 08 and that she fully expects that fall 09 will fill up VERY quickly. My thought is that people who are waiting for fall 08 will be accepted for fall 09 before anyone who has applied outright but I will get clarification on that as well.
