Accepted Columbia University's ETP student-meet-n-greet

Published

Hi there,

Thought I would start a Columbia thread for all of us who were eagerly waiting for that acceptance letter in the mail last week. Guess you can call this the meet-n-greet and maybe wear like a sticker with our screen names so we can recognize each other during the Visiting Day (ok, might look a bit goofy) but hey, what a way to start off our nursing careers together at Columbia.

I was estactic when i opened that letter, seemed like a thin envelope and was prepared for the worst, and then read the first line! I can't wait and indeed it was a life changing letter for both me and my wife, who also got accepted!! I also got into my first choice of specialty, Nurse Anesthesia, and getting into that program without ICU experience (besides being a nursing assistant in the ER and neurosurg unit as an undergrad) is just simply overwhelming. It took the whole weekend to sink in, and now, I'm psyched! I look forward to meeting all of you and enduring the next 12 months of craziness starting in June together.

See you on Visiting Day!! :balloons:

Best,

Charlie

That was you?! :lol2: I totally understand your excitement as I still feel the same thrill as I did when I opened my letter. Hope your experience at the Visiting Day only reassured your choice to study at Columbia, and I'll make sure to look for you on Orientation Day. As for "move in" day, i'm not too sure but I think they mentioned some time in late May. They won't start to process your housing app until you've actually turned in your acceptance deposit. I'm sure if you call the hosuing office they'll most likely give you a better idea in terms of time to move in. I would guess the week before classes start would be the assigned move in dates...hopefully you'll get your first choice of housing. Which specialty are you leaning towards? Oncology or did you talk to someone of another specialty whom might have changed your mind otherwise? take care and see you at Orientation!

Specializes in NICU.

IIRC, our orientation started on Wednesday, and move-in started the Saturday prior

Specializes in Perioperative Orthopaedics - scrub/circ.

I was fairly set on Columbia before visiting day, this visit just solidified that decision.

There were only 3 of us in Oncology so they placed us with those who were undecided. After speaking with the Oncology dir, she strongly encouraged us to do a double specialization (either pediatric, acute care, or adult).

I'm just going to call the Housing office on Monday, to finalize all the details so I can purchase my ticket. I'll let ya'll know what they say (if you decide to stay in the dorms).

Hi all - this thread may be old news by now - not sure I met any of you last week, but I thought the event was lovely. Better food than I expected, and solid info - loved the little rap by the Dean!!!:Melody: That clinched it for me.:lol2:

At first, I didnt know what she was doing; TOTALLY threw me off. I just sat there cause I was in shock. The food was a lot better than what I expected, and I think the umbrellas were an awesome gift.

The current students were great, so THANK YOU to ya'll that took time out of ya'lls day to answer our questions and giving us the grand tour (especially if any other group had a person [like myself] who asked a billion questions!!).

The only suggestions I have (I may be the only one), are that both "Columbia Nursing" merchandise being available for purchase for those who are definitely attending, and that more information on dates and availability of dorms are solidified earlier. Based on the hands raised, there seems to be a large number of ETP students from out of state, and if dorms are not available, there is little or no time to fly back to NY to find a place to live before classes start. Worst case: I'll find a nice alley or bench in Central Park to sleep on while i look for a place to live..lol

ps: Quick question... is the $500 the "enrollment fee" which also allows you to be eligible for housing? I couldnt get a straight answer when i called. I kept hearing something about not owing anything until they request a deposit of $300... but i read that the enrollment fee needs to be met...

I agree with the housing assignment delay being a problem. I am not from as far away as you (Connecticut), but it would still be nice to have the stress of knowing whether or not I will get campus housing off my mind. At least it will be warmer by the time you need to sleep on a park bench... :chuckle

I enjoyed the rapping as well and I was also a bit in shock at first... what a riot!! The food was definitely better than I expected as well.

From what I understand, the $500 must be submitted before the housing office will activate your application. I have not heard about any other amount being due before you are offered housing.

I'm looking forward to meeting you in May!!

OK, even though I'm officially a Yalie, I still hang out at this thread. I'm so glad to hear that everyone had a positive experience at visiting day! but someone has to explain this "rapping" to me--I'm intrigued! What the heck did she rap about, and at what point did she do this, and who IS this person!? I've been cracking up about this whole concept!:rotfl:

It was great. The dean, who both welcomed and congratulated us, spoke very refined and proper. THEN, she says, "oh yeah, one more thing..." and then started beat-boxing!!! I have no clue what she rapped about because my jaw was on the floor. I didn't know whether to laugh or rap-battle her 8-mile style!! lol. That eased the tension big time! She seems really cool... :Melody:

Bics - you would've loved it!! It was so random and so funny!!

So I have read in the threads that some programs/specialties have their act together - which seems to imply that other programs might not...? Are there problems I should know about?

I'm a bit overwhelmed. I applied for Gerontology and got in, and I've volunteered with hospice and feel a calling of sorts. Even if I switch, I'm going to do the subspecialty in palliative/end of life care. But I'm interested in the possibilities of psychiatric care and having a practice, and I also like the shifts that an acute care nurse would work...I can only really rule out neonatal and pediatrics. SO! Any advice?

Here's an article that leads me to believe I can do it all (eventually):nurse: :
