Acceptance to montgomery college nursing program

Published

Hi,

I was wondering what are my chances of getting accepted if I haven't taken A&P 1 or 2? I wanted to apply for fall 09. I have taken En 101 and 102, So101,bi107 ,py102, statistics, and speech. In the spring i want to take A&p 1 and Chemistry. I have heard that from a counselor i probably won't even be considered.

Your post is dated September 2009 and you said you wanted to apply for Fall 2009. I'm thinking you meant Fall 2010. But anyway, I just learned that I was accepted without having completed A&P. I have previously taken Micro, Chem and many other science classes because my undergrad major was biology. However, my classes are too old and have to be repeated. I had previously applied for Fall admission and was not accepted. I understand that there is less competition for Spring. Also, when I applied for Spring I included a letter, sort of in the form of an application essay. I don't know if that had an impact or if it was because there was less competition for Spring. I've also been taking some other (non-prereq) classes at MC and have a 4.0, so maybe that was factored in. I don't know. But I can tell you that it's possible to be accepted without having taken A&P. Good luck!!!

Realistically, I think that your chances are minimal. I applied last spring for Fall '09 and, at the time of the application, I was missing A&P I and II (though I was on track to have them both finished before nursing school would have started). I also had a prior bachelor's degree with a 3.96 GPA, a 4.0 GPA at MC for all of the other prerequisites, and I scored in the top 5% nationally on the TEAS. They still turned me down and specifically said in the rejection letter that it was because my A&P courses weren't complete as of the time of the application deadline. I don't mean to discourage you---just trying to keep you from getting your hopes up. As an alternative, you can apply to UMBs BSN program (the campus at Shady Grove is lovely if you want to stay in Mont Co) and you can still have prerequisites outstanding when you apply provided that they will be finished by the time you would start nursing school. Another thing that I didn't like about Mont College is that they don't have nursing classes over the summer. By my calculations, it was going to take me just as long to get an Associates degree from MC as the BSN from other schools. Best of luck to you! I've also heard really good things about Howard Community College's accelerated program (and, because of the supposed nursing shortage in MD, Montgomery Co residents still get to pay in-county tuition)

I live in Montgomery County and graduated from HCC. For me it was easier to get placed at HCC because they have an evening/weekend RN program and the selection process was not so much based on GPA. At the time, My GPA was a 3.6 but I would have been wait-listed forever at MC because all the applicants with GPAs of 3.8 and higher.

HCC does have some clinical sites in Montgomery County. You might also consider Frederick Community College as they have a very good RN program as well. I believe all of the community colleges in MD have in-county rates for MD residents in their RN programs. At HCC that applied to prerequisites too.

I went to the information session at Frederick and was told that there was nearly zero possibility of someone from another county gaining admission to their program. They do everything on a point system, giving points for GPA, grades in pre-requisites, test scores, etc. One of the things they give points for is being a Frederick County Resident. And they said they have enough competition for the spots in their own county that even if you receive top points for everything, you won't get the points for being a county resident and therefore will fall short of acceptance. Shrug.

I didn't have straight A's but I got in with a B somthing avg or so (they told me I needed a and p and gen and organic chem). I took organic saying I already had gen chem (they took my word for it and let me in). I didn't know anything and worked sooo hard for that c. I regret not taking gen chem (teach me to LIE)!
