Accelerated Nursing York 2015 entry

Published

Hello, I recently applied for York and UFT accelerated nursing program. I am very nervous of not getting in! Does anyone know the cutoff for last years accelerated nursing program for UFT and YORK?

Hey xibb, just wondering what your cGPA and GPA in the last 5.0 credits were when you got in!

Also, could you comment on your overall experience in the program so far? (Sorry if it's too broad of a question.)

I had an A GPA in both (cumulative 8.0 on York scale, 8.4 in last year's worth of credits). However, an A is definitely not the minimum GPA to get in. I've already discussed the cut off in this thread.

As for your second question, this is a very subjective question and you would get very different responses depending who you ask. I will say I definitely have far more readings than before. There is a lot to learn in nursing, so it's to be expected. Also, there are a lot of group presentations in the program (I have a friend at Bloomberg who seems to being doing them as well so this in not unique to York). I'm just letting you know that now because people were pretty outraged by this, but the program is pretty tight-knit and you'll make lots of friends with similar or complimentary work habits. The program will keep you busy but it's definitely manageable. You'll learn a lot!

Trying to think of what you guys might want to know... clinical in first semester starts in the 6th week of the term. Until then you'll have 3 hours of lab every week where nurses teach you the skills you'll need to know. You can also book time in the lab outside of class to practice any skills you want to brush up on, a nurse will be there to help you. 1st semester placement is in LTC (8h, 1 day per week), 2nd rehab (12h, 1 day per week), 3rd med-surg (8h x2 days per week), 4th community (don't know the hours/days past 3rd semester), 5th mental health or pediatrics, and 6th is your integrated (full time) practicum (IP). Clinical starts at 7 AM for almost everyone. Also so far we've always had 1 weekday off every semester.

xibb- thanks for all this information! My Gpa sounds just right where yours was so hopefully I wont have a hard time getting in if you did :)

The program sounds challenging and exciting! I am looking forward to learning and I just want to be in it already!

Do you find that people at Bloomberg have better placements (because it is Uof T and they are part of the UHN?) or York has equally good placements?

York has UHN placements as well.

Hi Everyone! I applied to York for the accelerated nursing program! I have been attending St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia and I am hoping I get into York! Has anyone gotten any acceptances?

Wow thank you xibb for explaining all this about york!

The cut-off for York is around a mid B. If you can get your cGPA in the B+ range, your chances are significantly improved. I'm in the program, we just finished our first semester. I don't mind answering some questions.

Probably the best advice I can give prospective students at this point is to make 100% sure your pre-reqs are on this list, even if you're a current York student: http://futurestudents.yorku.ca/sites/all/files/pdfs/ug-equiv-bscn2.pdf

hi!

How old is the list of pre-reqs? I am a U of T student in my final year and many of the courses listed here either totally don't exist or don't make much sense to me. I'm a bit nervous as I definitely have all the pre-reqs (or so I thought) but according to this list, things like Intro to Stats at u of t (STA220) doesn't satisfy the stats requirement? and many of the microbiology and physiology course codes listed just don't exist... Just wondering if it may be outdated and/or where you got it?

Thanks in advance!

Hi xibb. So you have 4 days of classes and clinical per week? or 4 days of class and 1 day for the clinical?

I got this from the admissions page the same day I posted it. I would contact the program for clarification if you believe the courses are outdated. It could also be that UofT changed some course code #s relatively recently. I know they are pretty picky with which stats courses they accept though...

Hi xibb. So you have 4 days of classes and clinical per week? or 4 days of class and 1 day for the clinical?

The nursing program at York always gives students 1 day off per week.

In 1st semester you'll have 4 days of classes until clinical starts, then 3 days and 1 day of clinical after (8 hs, LTC placement).

In 2nd you have 3 days of class and 1 day of clinical (12 hs, rehab placement).

3rd semester is 2 days of class and 2 days of clinical (2 8 hour shifts, med-surg/acute care placement).

Beyond that I'm not sure of but

I believe in 4th it's 2 days of class and 2 days of clinical (2 6 hour shifts, community placement) but I'm not 100% certain.

5th semester again I'm not certain but it's one day of clinical and I think it's 1 12 hour shift again (peds OR mental health, you can pick your preference but might not get it). I'm not particularly certain of this one either.

And 6th semester is full time ~38-40hs a week in clinical + an online course (this one I am certain of).

Clinical in 1st semester starts in mid October but all other semesters starts in the 2nd week of classes.

Realized after posting this that I already said a lot of this

How is the community placement like?

hey guys! I e-mailed York to ask about the equivalency list and some of the courses that I have taken at U of T that are not on this list. Just to clarify, the document on the future students website is not exhaustive and the admissions committee will have a much more comprehensive list of courses accepted as pre-reqs! Just in case you come across this and start to worry that the courses you have taken won't be recognized. All my pre-reqs meet the requirements, even though only my anatomy course was actually listed in the document :)

How is the community placement like?

I'm still in second semester, so I can't comment on the community placement.

Just to clarify, the document on the future students website is not exhaustive and the admissions committee will have a much more comprehensive list of courses accepted as pre-reqs!

In retrospect I actually thought this was the case but thought it better to be safe than sorry. Glad everything is okay!!
