Accelerated BSN program and working FT

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Hi-

I am curious to know if anyone take a accelerated BSN program and work full time at the same time. The school that I am planning to apply discourage their students to work full time. I don't think I can afford to not work at all. I have kids and bills to pay. Does anyone kow how much we can take out student loans a year? I need 50k a year to pay the school and household expenses.

Thanks in advance.

hi there,

Are you by anychance attending MCPHS in Worcester? I'll be there starting January. Just yesterday I put in an online FAFSA and since I already have a bachelors I was rewarded nothing. However it did say it was an initial review and that the financial aid administrator at MCPHS has the final say.

I too am curious as to the total cost of the program (I believe to be 30-40k??) I was wondering given the current circumstances on wall street if it will be difficult securing funding.

Glad to have you in the class and look forward to meeting you! Let me know if you find anything out.

Hi catamounts303- I am too worried about securing loans in the future. I already have cc debts, i am afraid that this will also matters.

Yes, I am going to their worcester campus but not until 2010. I am currently working on my requirements. I only have 2 pre-reqs left and I am planning to finish these by summer of 2009.

Please let me know on how things work out on your part. I am very interested how much money they can lend us.

best regards and good luck!

I completed an accelerated BSN program (summer 2006-summer 2007) and worked part-time at my previous full-time job while I was in school. I was in school full-time all 4 semesters (which included 4-5 days a week of class/clinical during the Fall/Spring and 5 days a week during the summer semesters).

For my job I was scheduled to work 20 hours a week, but since my employer was flexible, I ended up working maybe 15 or 16 hours most weeks and taking vacation time to make up my 20 hours. I consider myself a good student and there was NO WAY that I would have been able to work full-time while in school. The amount of studying, paper writing, working on projects, and homework involved in the program took up almost all my free time.

I don't have kids, and I lived at home with my mother while going to school so my expenses weren't that high. I also have a previous Bachelor's degree with student loans to pay, and I was only offered small government Stafford loans for financial aid. Most people in my program had to take out private loans or use family members to help pay for tuition.

I can understand the need to work full-time for money, but at least in my experience it's not practical. Good luck!!
