Accelerated BSN in NJ with low GPA

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

I know different variations of this topic have been beaten to death, but I wanted to see if I could gain any insight specifically from those that attempted ABSN programs in the NJ area with low GPA's. I graduated in 2009 from TCNJ with a 2.87. I've completed AP1 with an A, and I am currently taking AP2 and Lifespan Development (so far so good grade wise). I realize B's are not an option. After some internet digging I've discovered that my chances of getting into a ABSN in New Jersey are realistically low with an undergrad GPA under 3.0. In fact it is part of UMDNJ's policy to not even consider a GPA under 3.0. It's quite frustrating to think about when I recall the classes, professors, and circumstances that resulted in C's. But, woe is me. Admissions officers won't be bothered with all that so I am coming to terms with the reality. Does anyone have any advice, or am I doomed by my bad college GPA? What are my options?

You may want to look at associate RN programs. Afterwards you can do an RN to MSN bridge program when you decide to go back to school to get a graduate degree. I'm almost finished at UMDNJ and honestly will tell you they are a stickler for that 3.0 undergrad GPA.

Don't give up, you just may have to go a different route.

Hello and welcome to the site.

I moved your thread to the NJ Nursing Programs Discussion forum. Hopefully more folks from NJ will see it here and post some information that will be helpful.

okay, fair enough.

hi! i also graduated from tcnj in '09 and am trying to get into an accelerated bsn program! from what i've seen nj schools mostly prefer at least a 3.0 gpa. have you considered looking outside of nj? i know that desales university (pa) for sure requires at least a 2.5. also, there are some schools in ny you could look into. but if you really want to stay in nj, then i agree with glad2basn. even if you have to go an alternate route or take a lil longer, if you really want to be a nurse don't up!

No I'm not married to the idea of attending a school in NJ. Thanks for the DeSales tip. Leaving my area may even help me to focus more. I was actually looking into that OCU college today that seem to be notorious on here, but DeSales is much closer.
