ABSN info and receiving a W

Published

Hello everyone! Just joined this site! :)

I received my BA from Cal State Northridge and have decided to change paths and go after my second dream which is becoming a registered nurse. Currently I am at a community college taking my pre-requisites and by the end of 2019 I will be applying to ABSN programs, hopefully I get into CSUN's ABSN program which they just bought back again but I have been looking into others as well. I am taking Anatomy right now and I've become awfully sick and have had a member of my family pass away. Right now it's a rough time for me and I'm trying to push through this Anatomy course but I'm thinking about dropping the course with a W and take it next year. I'm also on the borderline of a B/C and I don't want to receive a C in this course. My question is how bad is it to have a W on my transcript, especially in Anatomy? Do ABSN programs question the W? I'm also considering ADN programs at community colleges if I don't get into an ABSN. Any type of information or tips will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

In my humble opinion, a W is much better than a C (as long as you don't have a pattern of getting a ton of Ws over several semesters). You should check with your current school and the schools you're applying to in order to ensure that a W won't be counted toward your GPA (in a handful of programs, they will count a W as an F, i.e. 0 points, but I don't think it's common). Assuming the W won't affect your GPA, it is much easier to explain a W in your application than it is to recover your cumulative GPA after one bad outlier brings it down. Unfortunately, if one bad grade drops your GPA down substantially, you may not make the mandatory GPA cutoff that many schools impose, which means your application won't be considered at all.

It's going to depend on the specific program rather than ABSN or ADNs in general. I also agree though that a W would look better than a C, especially as it would give you an opportunity to address it. But you should also make sure that the programs you willing to take your grade from the next time you take the class.

Thank you you two for responding and your input, I greatly appreciate it!
