About HPRS at El Centro

HPRS is a great class, but you can not just take it online. There is a lab portion that you have to complete in class. The lecture is offered to you online alnong with medical terminology quizzes that you complete online, but there are 7 modules that you must attend on campus. The labs sit only 16 students. So in the beginning of the semester, as soon as they post the lab schedule, I would recommend signing up because they fill up fast. These labs consist of orientation,vital signs, medical asepsis, wound care & catherization, oxygen therapy, safety, and specimen collection. You will have to pick you lab times, most are offered 8-12, 9-12, 1-4, there are no evening labs, and there are a couple of one hour labs which range from 7:30 - 8:30 am, 10-11, 9-10, 3-4, from what I can remember. You have 3 competency skills that you must pass within 20 minutes, an instructor watches silently while you perform the skill. You have critical points in the skill which you MUST do or say to the patient or you will fail the skill, you have 3 oppurtunities to pass the skill, if you do not pass, you fail the course. The three skills are vital signs (u pick ur partner), simple wound dressing, and catherization (both done on simulation patients). You also have 4 exams that you have to complete on campus but its online. Its more of a self-paced course, its up to you to suceed. Good luck, if you have anymore questions let me know!

Thanks for the reply!

I'm aware of the lab part but was wondering if the lecture (or classroom) portion was okay to take online...or are all lectures online automatically? I am not planning on an evening lab but a Saturday lab if they keep a similar schedule as they have for Fall '07. Just wanted to see if I could cut my time on campus on Saturdays a little shorter or if it was more beneficial to do the lecture in the classroom too.

I plan to sign up the first day I can. (for non-priority students)

All lecture is offered online, its simply just watching videos and demonstartions, there are some printouts also but those don't have to be turned in, they are for your benefit. But, I am not sure about the Saturday classes...I don't know how that schedule works each week, yet, I want to say, you meet Saturday and Sunday, at the same time, so lecture may be included in that section. I just went to the ADN Information session at NL yesterday that Kanora Jackson presented. She said the EC HPRS 1204 classes were 75% on-line with people going to class 4 times - 1. Orientation, 2. Vital Signs check off, 3. Wound care check off & 4. Foley checkoff. All the NL HPRS 1204 classes were traditional in-class classes.

I took HPRS 1204 this past summer on Saturday/Sunday afternoons and while most of the "lecture" part could have been on-line I was surprised when they said you only show up for check offs. Our instructor actually demonstrated each skill and we could ask questions there while she was demonstrating (plus one of the students took video of it and we could watch it off her camera). We were given a CD that had video of people doing each skill but for me the actual live demonstration was better.

I guess it would depend on what type of student you are and how you learn. Not much help - huh!!??

Yes, El Centro's HPRS is more self paced, because your able to pick when you want to attend which skill and when you want to get checked off, while at Noth Lake, everyone moves together. I was finished attending all 7 of my labs and finished with all 3 of my competency check offs by October 12th. Some people are still trying to find check off slots, and trying to find extra seats in the labs! :oBut I'm not sure, why she would have said, EC students only attend classes 4 times, its more than that because you must attend certain modules prior to attending another module and a competency check off. Plus going to open labs to practice your skills...:uhoh21: I'm not sure why she would say that because I've definitely been to classes more than just 4 times. lol

Thankfully not all Saturday labs are Sa/Su. There are two this semester that are only on Saturday afternoon (longer, of course!)...I am hoping this Spring will have a similar offering!
