aacn and the hartford institute for geriatric nursing at nyu college of nursing have developed six web-based modules to help nursing faculty maximize their use of nursing homes as clinical training sites, with a special focus on nursing homes involved in resident-directed care and culture change. to foster discussion on when and how to use nursing homes as clinical placements and to review the six modules, a three-part series of free webinars will be offered on october 18th, november 10th, and december 6th.

as reflected in the 2008 essentials of baccalaureate education for professional nursing practice and the 2010 recommended baccalaureate competencies and curricular guidelines for the nursing care of older adults, the rising population of older adults calls for a strengthening of geriatric nursing content in baccalaureate programs. clinical rotations in nursing homes are unique in allowing students to care for older adults with complex and overlapping illnesses over a sufficient period of time, be exposed to healthcare teams, have faculty supervision that fosters the student’s appreciation of both the complexity of the care, and have the opportunities to achieve improvements that promote quality of life.

featured speakers for this series include mathy mezey, edd, rn, faan, sarah greene burger, rn-c, mph, faan, and ethel l. mitty, edd, rn, hartford institute, nyu college of nursing; and christine mueller, phd, rn, faan, university of minnesota school of nursing.
