A Questions About Second Degree BSN

Published

Alright. So I'm helping my girlfriend search for nursing schools. Her location of choice is the Midwest or the Northern area of the South. She's currently a junior at a four year college, but her school doesn't offer nursing school. She's looking to transfer in to a nursing program. She's got the GPA and she's only a few pre-reqs short of most nursing programs. In any case I have a few questions. One, can she enter in to a second-degree BSN program. Do you need a full first degree for those or just a lot of undergraduate credits? Two, how can I find schools that admit directly in to the nursing program? Three, if she went for an accelerated BSN would most require additional pre-reqs? Let me know the answers to any of these. Thanks.

Katie

Also, could she maybe do a direct entry MSN program?

Katie:

Here is a good site that lists all of the accelerated BSN and Direct Entry MSN programs in the country (grouped by state:

Second Degree programs generally require that you have a BS/BA degree already. They can be 9-24 months in duration, and each program has different course prerequisites.

Transferring into a BSN program would generally require 2-3 years of additional study to get that first undergraduate degree. Many programs also have course prerequisites for transfers.

In general, I would recommend that she complete her undergraduate degree at her present university, and aim for an ABSN or DE-MSN program for the next step
