A little apprehensive....need advice

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Hi All! I am supposed to be starting my pre-reqs in September for nursing. I am starting to get really concerned about being able to find a job in the field after I have completed school and passed the NCLEX (while I know tis is still 5 years away). I have talked to alot of people who are stating that new grads just are not finding jobs in Mass. While I guess I could relocate if I had to...I really do not want to. Does anyone have any advice on things I can do while in school increase my opportunites for finding a job after? I was thinking about completing an EMT program and working part time doing that while in school...I am just really torn up about this decision. I have wanted to be a NICU nurse since I was little.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Mandy,

You are right... the job market is tight for new grads right now. However in 5 years the climate might be a very different and there may be an abundance of positions.

In the meantime, I would focus on your pre-reqs and your classes. I strongely recommend working as an aide in the hospital, while going to school for a few different reasons.

1. It gives you "Real World" exposure to what nursing is all about.

2. You can apply what you area learning about in school.

3. You have an opportunity to refine your skills.

4. Most hospitals like to hire their own when you graduate.

Look into getting your CNA license. Some hosptials offer a program or go through the American Red Cross. Once licensed, apply for positions at hospitals with NICUs that you want to work at. That way you will get your foot in the door and well be able to demonstrate to them why they should hire you when you graduate.

Good Luck!

Thank you so much for the advice!

I received a call today from a hospital close to our house and they asked me to come in tomorrow for an interview for a unit secretary postion! I'm siked...I'm still waiting to hear back from my school about the CNA course...I swear they are so slow its ridiculous...I have called 3 times...and am not getting anywhere fast.:crying2:
