A&P or Microbiology...what to take first???

Published

I am trying to put classes i need to take in order. What would you recommend taking first?

thank you :)

Well, you need them both so pick one. I took A&P 1 to get it out of the way, now taking Micro, then A&P2 after.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Med-Surg.

A&P 3 is the prerequisite for Micro at my school. I think it helped a little being able to understand physiology a bit before delving into the microscopic world. So...I would take A&P first.

I would absolutely take A&P first, there are concepts of systems effected by certain bacteria/viruses and how/why they effect those systems that you should know before taking micro. Anatomy and Physiology will absolutely cover them.

I'm taking Micro now and it is so much easier because I took A&P last semester. Good Luck!

Specializes in Ante-Intra-Postpartum, Post Gyne.

Personally I do not think it matters. They are unrelated.(in the sense that you need one before the other to understand) There is no advantage to taking one before the other. I actually did Physio, then Micro and then Anatomy. Taking Micro in the middle was not hard at all. Taking Physio before anatomy was mind numbing, but it made anatomy feel like a cake walk when it came around.

Specializes in Labor and Delivery.

I took API first and then Micro and APII at the same time. I really think it helped that I took API first, there were many concepts from API that were revisited in Micro (except she went a lot faster in Micro). For the first two tests I didn't have to kill myself studying because it was like a review. :monkeydance:

It seems like maybe Micro classes are different? Or I just did not realize some anatomy/physio stuff was used in micro...so ingrained it just second nature. I took Micro with Chem and there were a few times I saw them cross, especially when we got to Biological Chemistry, a lot of it was "I did this in Micro" and even "We learned that in NUTRITION!"

from what I remember some of the first things we did in Micro was go over characteristics of the cell, Electron Transport chain, and glycolysis, which I had all just did the previous semester in API. We even did some basic chemistry (same stuff from API), and I hadn't taken chemistry yet, so I'm glad it was covered in AP.

OH, I understand what you all mean now. But we did not even cover this in Anatomy or Physio, we were supose to already know this stuff from Basic Biology which was required before ALL.:trout:

Oh, I see. I guess every school sets it up differently. At my school they go over that stuff in API, and Micro because Bio 101 is encouraged, but not a mandatory prerequisite. Confusing that we're learning the same things, but so differently:lol2:

Thank you everyone for the replies.
