A&P/Micro Online Courses for California

Published

Hi all, I'm new to the Forums, although I've been lurking for a few months.

I'm one of those semi-mid-life career changers who is planning to enter Nursing after 15+ years in a different and completely unrelated field. Obviously, I'm anxious to get my prereqs out of the way so I can get on the waiting list for an ADN program. All I need to take are the three core science courses: Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology.

I've been doing some research on the various online schools (like CCCOnline, Edukan, etc) and am definitely interested in completing my three prereq courses through one of these routes. I'm familiar with online education, and have already earned an advanced certificate program in my current line of work via an online program.

My question is, do any of you have first-hand knowledge that ADN programs in Southern California accept A&P and Micro via an online course with labs? I'm specifically interested in Santa Monica College, Moorpark College, Los Angeles County College of Nursing, or other ADN programs in the Greater Los Angeles/San Fernando Valley area.

I will of course be calling several of these programs to confirm with them directly, but they're all out on Spring Break, and I'd LOVE to get a preliminary answer before next week.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

Where do you work? I'm at Lindero and TO Blvd. I'm going to apply to most of the same schools you are. BTW, Moorpark has an online physiology class with Dr. Marten that is really good. I'm just finishing it. Lots of busy work, but a very good class overall. They do require you to come in for orientation and exams though. Not sure if he has the online class over the summer, but he will have it in the fall for sure on Tues/Thurs evenings and mornings. It's live lecture and you do the lab simulations on your own time. There are written case studies and online homework/quizzes for lecture and lab.

Since you are so close, I would strongly recommend that class as a viable option for you. I took it while taking an in-person Anatomy class and have done well in both classes as they relate to each other. Each class is solidifying the information and memorization for the other class.

I haven't figured out how to send a Private Message, but if you can, send me one and we can figure out a time to meet for coffee to chat in person.

Heads up - I have confirmed with LA County that they WILL accept Ocean County's online micro course. They did quite a bit of research and only got back to me within the last 2 weeks.

I've talked to College of the Canyons. Their Science dept head has indicated that it is not "equal" to their onsite class, however the counselor assured me that the final decision is made by the Nursing dept head for accepting pre-requisites - yet the nursing dept had sent me to the counselor to begin with.

Good luck!!
