we were just told by a home health nurse that is caring for my hubby's wound that every time you can the dressing & expose the wound that it slows down the healing process by 7 hours...is this true?..this is one thing i have never heard of before.

thanks in advance:confused:

I am new to nursing, but I just had a LPN convince a doc to leave a stage 2 decub ulcer open to air. It was covered with DuoDerm with Silverdine for the last 2 weeks. I never heard of this in nursing school, the doc said there was no scientific evidenct that covering the wound would help it heal! Can anyone point me to evidence based articles. Thanks.

This web site is an index to evidence-based guidelines developed by various medical and nursing organizations. The link I cited above is the guideline developed by the American Medical Directors association. There are also guidelines developed by nursing organizations, but I have a feeling that this MD would not believe the nurses.

The above guideline states, "The goals of dressing a wound are to keep the ulcer bed moist and the surrounding skin dry and to protect the wound from contamination. Choose dressings based on wound characteristics including location near contamination sources, presence and amount of exudate, wound depth, and the condition of the surrounding skin."

Good luck in converting this doc.
