Milwaukee Area Technical College- Questions for LPNS and RNS

U.S.A. Wisconsin

Hello,

I am from Illinois. I have been attending MATC for the past year. I am just finishing most of the general classes and am starting to get into the harder classes such as Biology, Chemistry, and other NATSCI classes....

I was hoping to get advise from anyone out there going to or who has gone to MATC on anything ranging from what teachers are good to what to expect with the petitioning process and program. I'm so excited and nervous about it all, I'd love any feedback.

:nurse:Thanks!:nurse:

I would complete all my general classes. I would transfer bryan and sttran after for clinicals you will get done a lot faster.

I'm not sure what you are going for but if you are looking to become a registered nurse I STRONGLY suggest going for your BSN. I know some of the hospitals are making it mandatory to get your bsn by a certain date and I have a strong feeling other hospitals in the area will follow, along with having your bsn allows better pay in the long run because you are able to move up further in the system.

I'm a current MATC student (starting clinical courses in January).

I took most of my NATSCI classes in person, I'm not sure you can do any of them 100% online actually but I could be wrong. I know there are some combination classes (lecture online but lab is in person) So be sure to check that info out.

The petition process is mostly just a lot of paperwork and your medical records to show you are current on all vaccines and TB. You also have to have completed the CNA class (but don't have to be certified just pass the class).

I'm finishing my ADN and then will bridge to my BSN somewhere else because I need a job sooner than I could get one finishing my BSN. There are still hospitals hiring ADN nurses in the Milwaukee area and there of course area all kinds of RN jobs that aren't in a hospital too.

Hi,

I go MATC and am graduating from the LPN program in about one week. My advice is, make sure your transcript records are clean. The board of instructors that select the students who petition look at how many dropped classes u have and why. If u drop a class, like say a&p because you flunked it, then you will get points deducted and so on. Your science course grades are a good predictor including your NLN PN entrance score! So study hard for that and get the study guide to help u do good. A minimal score of 100 is required, the higher the better!

And when u r selected into the nursing program, stay focused! It was intense for me. Dont work if u can. I had to because I have a family and bills. But if I had a choice, I'd chosen to not work! :)

Also, MATC now implemented the HESI tests into the program. It's muh different from ATI. I took it and passed, and it was a hard test. Study a lot and do questions from nclex Saunders book or HESI's nclex book. Hope this helped!

MATC has a GREAT program! I'm going into 4th semester next week and wouldn't have changed a thing. Don't go to Bryant & Stratton. They don't set their standards high and you only have to pass with a 70%. Most, if not all employers will hire an ADN, especially coming from MATC and they offer tuition reimbursement to go from ADN to BSN upon hire. ADN and BSN take the same NCLEX and actually have better preparation because they have more clinical experience. The program is no joke. It's intense and the instructors are phenomenal!!

I'm glad to hear that Miswend78!

I'm really excited (and a bit terrified) to start classes next week. Those books are no joke! They weigh a ton. I'm at the Mequon campus and really looking forward to digging in and working hard for 4 semesters! I've heard nothing but good things about places hiring from MATC and really thinking that they turn out good nurses.
