University of Washington SoN Fall 2013

U.S.A. Washington

Published

Anyone applying to the UW SoN for fall 2013? Anyone else FREAKING OUT about it like I am?

Specializes in IR, Cardiac Tele,Burns, Peds Trauma & ER.

t to settle nerves about their expectations:

It is a total package. I only had a 3.4 cumulative GPA, a 3.2 in my natural sciences and a previous DUI. MANY years ago though.

Like another person stated one person in our cohort has ZERO patient care experience and the minimum number of hours of volunteering experience required. His past life he was a musician in a band....

It really is a ODD way of how they select. I am totally baffled. A good friend of mine with great grades, a ton of hands on trauma experience and volunteering experience applied for the SECOND time and STILL did not get in....

Very Odd indeed....

Rule #1 as I have always said..... FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS.

That is all

First, thank you JLoya and the rest of the current students who have offered suggestions, words of advice, and congrats! I know I have been reading and re-reading their posts and really taking them to heart.

Secondly, for those invited to the proctored essay this year.....I found some helpful posts from last year and years previous containing advice about taking the essay and even some examples of the types of math we can possibly expect. I know that I'm most freaked out about the math, and so it was helpful to work some of the example problems. As stated by those who have taken the essay before us, the math is shockingly easy. I also typed in "proctored essay" on the search box here on allnurses.com and found many examples and advice regarding proctored essays from other nursing schools, which I found helpful. Lastly, I typed in "medication conversions" above and also found many examples of real life problems that I have been using for practice.

Good luck to everyone!

Just dreamed I missed the essay bc my car was stolen...getting nervous! I want to study & practice but I don't know I can :/

Hi Jessica:

One suggestion given to me by my husband was to start thinking in detail about the patient care and interactions you've had. Really think about what stands out to you. What did you learn? How did it guide you on your path to nursing? Did you have to get past any biases, opinions, roadblocks? Last night when I couldn't get to sleep (too nervous) I started writing just 'blimps' about some of my patient care experiences. It truly got me thinking about care, leadership, how to ask for help, and how to work with all kinds of people. Even if the essay doesn't specifically ask those types of questions, I think it can't be anything but good to revisit my experiences and keep them fresh in my mind.

Hope this helps!

Thank you all for the suggestions, I had no idea there was a search function, a special thank you to those current and past students, for taking the time out of your day to help us, I know you're prob swamped with school work! I'm glad that they don't expect you to be an all out know it all with nursing school knowledge, I'm currently an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force & a little intimidated with all of my fellow applicants that have 5,000 hours in their jobs, just going to try my best, listen to all your suggestions & hope for the best :)

I was curious as to how many applying have their associates already? I will be writing the proctored essay out-of-state and am extremely anxious.

I'm actually completing my direct transfer, but in pre-nursing. It was nice to go that route because not only do I get the transfer degree, but also completed all the pre-reqs for the nursing program for all four-year schools in the State of Washington.

Good luck with your proctored essay!

@ SaraFutureNurse? I just graduated in December with my Associates of Science in Utah, so luckily everything is transferable. Like someone else had mentioned, I am really starting to think it is a crap shoot on who gets accepted.

Jessica,

This is the whole point of the essay. DO NOT put any healthcare treatments into the essay, none of us are nurses yet. This isn't a "nursing care case". This is what YOU as a HUMAN would do. Why did you choose this case, why did you not choose the other two cases, what will you gain both personally and professionally from such an experience.

I have well over 6000 hours of experience in a Level One Trauma Center. I chose the case that was not ER related and I made it very clear why I did not choose the one where I was most comfortable. I told them I chose the option that I had no experience in because I wanted experience that I have not yet encountered. Some power words that many here might not see unless they read this whole paragraph, "create a therapeutic healing environment", if the case calls for it use any experiences you have to become a "culturally competent care provider", lastly know how to utilize all of your resources, Social Work, Spiritual Care, any personal experiences you can enlist to gain your patients trust.

Hope this helps... Just think we have a former "rock star" with NO experience in our cohort...
