I'm moving to the Dupont area

I was a Labor and Delivery nurse for 17 years until I blew out my C5 trying to keep a patient from falling. Now, for the last 9 months, I have been a NICU nurse in a level 3 (really more of a level 2 and they lack the staff to train me on the important things like vents and chest tubes).

The only nearby hospitals I see are Good Samaritan and St. Claires. Am I missing any and can anyone who works in NICU in any of them give me some insiders scoop?

First off, welcome to Washington! I'm a pre-nursing student, but another hospital near Dupont is Madigan Army Medical Center at Fort Lewis. If you go south about 10-15 miles into Olympia, there is also Providence St. Peter Hospital and Capital Medical Center. Good luck!

I don't know how far you're willing to commute, but if I lived in Dupont I'd be willing to drive to basically any of the Olympia or Tacoma hospitals, which would add several to the list of potential hospitals.

Welcome to WA! DuPont is a great yet expensive place to live that sits between tacoma and the olympia/lacey/tumwater area. Check out St Francis. I did my OB rotation there. Nice Place. Good Sam, St Peters, Capitol Medical Center, St Clare's, Check out the entire Providence Health System and Franciscan health system. They are huge here. Swedish Health is big, too. St. Joseph's is a hospital in Lakewood that you could look at, too.

This is just a rough rundown of the places I know of off the top of my head. I'm not a NICU nurse.

Welcome to Washington! For NICU, Madigan has a level III and is the closest to Dupont. St. Pete's in Olympia has a NICU. Tacoma General has a level III and is a short drive from Dupont; just down the road is St. Joseph (St Joes) which has a level 2b (shares the same NNPs and neonatologists with Tacoma General). If you let me know if you are more interested in level 2 or level 3, I can point you in the right direction. St. Claire's does not have OB or NICU (they are part of the Franciscan group and St. Joes and St. Francis have OB).

St. Peter Hospital in Olympia is a primary care - no CNA's. There are a lot of nurses who have left because they feel it is an unsafe hospital and the expectation of nurses is unrealistic. The Franciscan system is great -- the nurse-to-patient ratio is realistic and safe. The Franciscans have a hospital in Lakewood, Tacoma and Federal Way. Supportive environment.
