Where Are All the Virginia Nurses? I Have a Question... Please...

U.S.A. Virginia

Published

It seems like there are very few (if any) Virginia nurses who post in this forum--that all the posters are students. I posted a while back and was kind of surprised that I didn't get any responses. So, I'll try again, and maybe someone can answer my question.

I am an RN with 10 years of LTC/SNF experience and I am planning to move to Northern Virginia in the fall. I am wondering what the current job market is like for nurses with experience, who prefer to work in LTC. (I've read how tough it is right now for new grads trying to get hospital experiece, but my scenario is different.)

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated...

First of all, define "Northern Virginia". If you're talking Arlington/Alexandria, I can tell you that I'm getting a lot of solicitations for RNs for charge in LTCs. As you get to the suburbs, such as Fredericksburg and Warrenton, the demand drops off perceptably. The SNFs here seem to have stable RN staffing right now.

There are fewer facilities combined with an easy commute, so the turnover isn't all that great. Also there is more competition from the acute hospitals in the bigger cities. If you're not going to live in the Alexandria/Arlington/Fairfax area then I would suggest you be prepared to do some commuting.

Best of luck to you in your search.

Wow! Somebody actually responded! I had just about given up hope for some advice...

I am planning to move to the Arlington area in the fall, so I am glad to hear that there are some openings in LTC in that area.

I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks.
