NVCC-HLT 250-Textbook

I found a book on Amazon that is a highly rated Pharmacology book. It is called Pharmacology for Nursing Care by Lehne. My friend who is in HLT 250 right now said that her teacher doesn't really teach from the book and that he doesn't really care for it. I would much rather buy a highly rated book that would help me throughout school than a crappy book that nobody cares for. I already purchased Nursing Pharmacology made Increadibly Easy. I should mention that I am taking it online over the summer and that the TBA teachers are Cane, Brooks and Dooley. I sent all three of them an email asking their views on the subject so I will wait and see what they say as well. I just know that I have taken several classes now where the book is hardly used or necessary. And if I had contacted my Bio-Ethics teacher before buying that required book I could have saved myself a lot of money ($120) because he hates our book and surely would have recommended something better, and easier to turn around and sell, rather than our schools custom version.

Worst case scenario I will buy both and sell back the one listed for the class, when the class is over. I just want to avoid that if I can.

I primarily used Parmacology for health professionals by Sally Roach AND the Study guide for that same book ISBN 0781753325 I did mine online a few yrs back, so I imagine it has changed now. Be nice to Mrs D, as she is the 2nd yr dean,lol Ms C is my advisor and she is very nice as well.

Believe it or not, they are still using the same book! I just don't understand why they would use a book that nobody likes, when there is a better option. My mom swears that he textbooks that are chosen by colleges are done so for political reasons.

I'm sure it is!! Just like how some Dr push certain medications!! I think I relied a fair bit on the study guide, but I did this back in late 2006 early 2007 timeframe.

I took that pharmacology class online last summer with Ms Dooley and Cane! Now Ms. Cane is my NUR201 (Psych) professor. She is great. I like her lectures. She has a great sence of humor.

I spent all summer with Pharmacology text book in my hands. Ask me if I remember anything :chuckle

By the way, I like this text book better than the one people use in in-person class. I compared mine to the one my friend had. Have fun!

Thanks for the info! Originally when I registered for the course is had Dooley listed as the instructor and now it has Dooley, Cane, and Brooks listed. I didn't realize all three of them would teach the class.

I recall very little from that course,lol All 3 profs mentioned are excellent.

FutureNOVARN -- I was wondering if you ever received a response regarding the books from the teachers? I too am registered to take HLT 250 this summer online with Cane, Brooks and Dooley.

Here was Dooley's response:

"The assignments and exams are based on the required text. You should be able to use any general pharmacology text as a resource, but sources often differ, and the syllabus is our contract with the students so the required text listed in the syllabus will be considered the ruling document unless we post an announcement on Blackboard saying otherwise."

And here is Cane's response:

"I cannot speak to another source (text). Faculty has looked at many books and we like the Roach book for this course. If another book works for you that is fine I cannot think of any reason why it might not but it is up to you. The Roach book is required but with an online course we have little control over that kind of thing."

I decided to just buy the book. I don't want to risk it. It just seems like for many of the classes I have taken I have not needed the book. But now that I think about it that applies only to the classes I took on campus. And every class I have taken online required reading the books cover-to-cover. Then again I would think that most pharmacology books were created equal...

I did use that textbook a lot when I took NUR250 online. I got a study guide too but it didn't have the answers to questions. I thought it was very odd. The instructor had to post answers online if I am not mistaken.
