UTA Spring 2012

Nursing Students Texas (UTA)

Published

Alas! Here I go again!;) This thread is dedicated to all hopefuls to either of the programs- AP or traditional. Let's partake in the sharing of ideas, suggestions, and/or insight in the "intricacies" of this nursing program. Former grads, new or current students are encouraged to chat. Knowledge is power, indeed! Continued blessings and success to all! Good Luck!:D

Help!! I am currently enrolled in Patho and Pharm for Fall 2011 at UTA. Since UTA raised their tuition rates, these two classes alone cost $2100 ($1050 each). UTA will accept these classes as transfer credit if we take them from a different school (another poster had her credits transferred TO UTA). I am only taking Patho and Pharm to satisfy UTA's requirements on the "off" chance that I get in. I'm sure if I get accepted into a different program, I'll have to take these classes over again.

Who else has Patho and Pharm online besides UTA? $1050 per class is ridiculous!

@katybusymom, There are a few threads about online path and pharm classes if you search AN. Your best bet is to find a community college that offers it to transfer students, as $1000 is about standard for a 3 hour course at a public 4-year university.

I'm going to look into it. $1000 is not standard. UTA's non-nursing pre-req classes are half that price ($504).

They have a special price set for the general education pre-requisites if taken through the online academic partnership program. Their regular tuition for on-campus classes is $1004 for 3 hours. This is about what it costs at other public 4-year institutions, at least in the DFW area. 3 hours cost less than $500 total at community colleges in the area, though.

That was my point......why are Pharm and Patho priced so much higher than the general ed classes if they are delivered in the same format? The price last year was $650, this year it's $1050 for the exact same class. I understand paying more money for "in class" instruction, but for them to raise tuition that much for those two classes seems a little high in my opinion.

I must have Patho and Pharm to meet UTA requirements......so if anyone has any info on where I might be able to take these classes online at a cheaper rate, please let me know.

Thanks.

I thought Patho and Pharm were two of the courses that had to be taken at UTA along with Intro to Nursing?

Ok I have an odd question...I for some reason thought I had received an email from UTA about the tuition rate increase but thought it said that if you were enrolled currently this did not affect you??! Did I read that wrong? I guess I thought that since I was currently enrolled in a nursing career path plan that I would be charged at the old rate...I must have completely misread it but was wondering if anyone remembers reading something like that and what that email meant?? Thanks!!

@tejas03, I just re-read the email and it seems that whatever the price is when you enroll, it stays that way until you bump up to the next level of classes (e.g. if you enroll for pre-req's your pre-req rate will stay the same until you are done with them, but when you start the nursing courses the tuition rate will be whatever it has been raised to for that semester and then stays that way throughout the rest of the program). Who knows...we have been told conflicting info in the past, so if it were me enrolling I would be sure to double check before doing so.

Hey Mochachild...wondering where ya been?! :) Yes, this is the place to be...haha Spring '12 is definitely turning out to look even worse than Fall '11!! You have great advice!! I know you will be accepted somewhere! Can't wait to hear where!

I need to know what other colleges/universities waive the 5yr science limit? I will have Micro and A&P 2 current but my chemistry is about 10 yrs old and A&P1 is 7 yrs old...I hate to have to retake those 2 since I have A's in them now. I am going to have to start looking elsewhere now and start making a plan for the future.

You and I are very similar, Tejas. I also have a prior degree and am stuck having to retake sciences that are very old. We also have very similar GPA's, so when you first posted back in May that you had not been accepted, I knew for sure that I hadn't been either. My degree is from UTSA and not UTA. I am 37 and was a nursing major when I first started college in the early 90's. Life got in the way and I didn't finally finish until I was 30 and I got a history degree (vastly different, I know). I only had B's in my sciences. I got an A in my retake of A & P I through a community college in San Antonio in 2009 and I am currently taking A & P II online thru UTA (which I will post on here separately about since I am still not at enough posts to do PM's LOL). I was looking at UTA because of the cost and their lack of age limit on sciences. I, too, decided to retake it in hopes of upping my science GPA.

I am also looking at other programs as well, but will still have to, at the very least, retake Micro and man, I REALLY hope I won't have to redo Chem. I hate having to retake these classes, though it likely makes sense to do it since they are so old. But what I REALLY resent is the constant freakout panic attack I go into if I make a B on a test instead of an A. It is really sad that, as a student, you can 't be thrilled with a B in a tough science course and instead spend gobs and gobs of money to retake it just to try to make an A and then still end up not being accepted into nursing school.

I have looked into other programs and even alternate methods. I am now living in FW, so I have thought about doing an LVN first, then the bridge (which will kill 2-3 years unfortunately), I even looked at the EMT course thru TCC because you can also bridge from there. I don't know what will be better. I feel like I am wasting time to do these programs just to be able to bridge into an RN or BSN program, but OTH, it's looking like I will be wasting all that time anyway just sitting around waiting to get into UTA. At least I will feel like I am doing something productive. I am single, quit my teaching job in SA, and moved here to try to follow my dream and I am just majorly bummed all the time thinking I may have made a huge mistake. There was no way I could do these classes and make an A while teaching. Teaching is a lot more time-consuming than people realize. blah....ok, gripe over.:uhoh3:

@Zweiells......Thank you for helping me with that..I will double check the pricing when I enroll for fall just to make sure! :)

@Libra1018....I can completely get the life getting busy thing....that's why I haven't had a chance to go back and finish (3 kids in 7 years..haha). I am really hoping I will not have to retake Chem if possible?! I did decide to go ahead and retake A&P 1...I may go ahead and just do A&P1 first and then do A&P2 in October....this will put all my sciences (minus Chem) current and allow me a little flexibility with other colleges/universities if that's what it comes to.

I got a BA in Political Science 10 yrs ago because I already had so many credits and really wanted to be able to put them somewhere so Political Science it was...haha Who knows maybe one day after I get my BSN I can go to law school and focus in medical malpractice...hey, at 36 what's another 10 years of school...hahaha.....my husband would seriously have a heart attack if he read this. :) He can't wait for me to get finished and get a job! :)

I agree with you about the B's...it is crazy that if you don't get an A it was pretty much a waste of time nowadays. :( I was just thinking about that the other day in regards to my Micro class...how stressed I am over it and that anything less than an A would have been a waste of money and my time...sad I know! Nursing is a very competitive area here at these schools.

Mochachild is correct in that there are many many ways to go about the nursing path...we just need to stay positive and focused and continue to explore all avenues so that in the event UTA doesn't work out for us, we will be ready to go to another school.

I admire you for teaching...that is a very hard and time consuming career and it takes a special person to work with children...that's awesome! How are you liking the metroplex so far?

Hello Ladies,

In my quest to prepare for acceptance into someones Nursing School I applied at several hospitals in hopes of increasing my chances at getting into UTA. Today I had to go to Parkland and take a PCA test which was fairly easy. You only have to score an 80% to pass if you don't pass you can take it the following week. At any rate, after all this talk about wanting to be a Nurse for some odd reason I got so nervous being in that atomosphere. I had never been in such a busy place. I hope that was just temporary or just nerves of taking a test.

Okay, I just wanted to vent that. I couldn't believe that I was such a wreck.

@MsMila....that's awesome! I am wondering if you can tell me how the application/interview process went for you? How long after you applied did it take someone to contact you? What positions are you applying/been hired for? I am looking into trying to get a PRN position with any of the partnering hospitals in the area too. Thanks for any advice you might have!
