Hey. i am a travel nurse who currently holds a compact license. i applied for a cali license a couple weeks ago ( mid may) and requested a temp license because i know there is a issue on my background. i sent alot of documentation, but know it will prob take an additional amount of time. i am hoping to get an assignment omewhere around the begining to mid august. My question is does anyone know if they will go ahead and issue a temp license while waiting to issue the perm in the time frame i am hoping for or am i going to have to wait and wait on everything?

Hello! I only had a few documents myself. I had one that I found online that stated my case was closed. Def send in a letter written by you describing what happened in detail and what you learned , then sign it. In the letter you can also explain that you have made attempts to get more records but they were destroyed. If you haven't yet, contact the county court offices and see if they have any info on if. I had to actually go to the county clerks office myself to get anything done it seemed.

I finally did get my Massachusetts license, it took about 10 weeks. I have never encountered any real problems with my Underage possession of alcohol charge. It gets in the way all the time and poses delays, but so far it hasn't caused problems with my career. You will get your license I am sure. After you send everything in, call or email a representative from the board and see if they need any additional documents. That's all you can do. Just be a go getter and don't be afraid to be an annoyance to both the board and the county clerks office. Give yourself 3 months processing time to be safe, but I doubt it will take that long! No worries.... I found Massachusetts to be the most complicated and difficult/non user friendly application process out of all 8 states I have applied to.

Yikes, 3 months is a long time! But if that is how long it takes, that is how long it takes...:barf02:

I have called the court at least 4 times at this point, and the state police (to at least get a copy of the charge) at least 5 or 6 times. The record seems to have disappeared into thin air, but I know it exists because I paid about 600.00 dollars in fines in 2002 (took me almost a year to save up). The other issue is that the charge was in VA and I have no time or really the money to go there to bug all these people to get the paperwork from them. I will just have to pray that my receipt of payment, letter from the court about destroying their records, and criminal record from VA will be enough. Also I am starting think I should disclose my story behind why after of working in human services for almost 7 years I decided to become a nurse (my reason: I am a brain tumor survivor, and I watched my succumb to cancer). I will write a very detailed explanation of everything.

Though, I still don't understand how a court can just destroy everything without having at least an electronic record of the case, or even the citation.

I have to go to the BON office to fill out the CORI they want for MA, so I will try to talk to someone when I am there.

*sigh* I am just so ready to take my exam!

Thank you for you help, I really appreciate it!

Your letter of explanation will help a lot, as well as the letter explaining that they have no records. Have you searched the VA website online for your name? I guess it's probably gone too.

Wow you are so brave to survive that and now want to get into the field! Have confidence that it will go fine, and it may take a few weeks longer then someone with a clean record, but this type of offense is not quite so serious in this context. People with DUIs and narcotic abuse records have a much harder road ahead. I always write in my letter that I have had no problems since the offense 8 years ago and that the case is closed. Always submit more info then you think you may need. And just remember to follow up in about 4 weeks after you submit.

That was suppose to say watched my mother succumb to cancer. Sorry was on my ph. It was really tough, but it was the nurses that got and my family through it, and with my brain tumor, after 4 years of being misdiagnosed it was a nurse who finally help get me the MRI I desperately needed. (go nurses! :nurse:)

As for looking online, I already searched their online record base, no luck. I will get started on my personal statement tomorrow. Luckily I was actually with a friend when I got caught (not so lucky for her lol). She later went to law school and had to disclose the incident when she applied to take her BAR exam, she was able to provide me with specific dates, so that is helpful. I am getting a reference from the program coordinator at my school, I have another one from one of my jobs in human services, and think I will ask my last full time job for one as well. I would as my current job, but I want to ask the for an RN position when this is done, and I would rather people there don't know about this (we don't have to disclose criminal hx in MA, and our background check is only statewide).

Good tip for me to keep following up, I will make sure to do that. First order of business though, is to get my Dean to sign off on my paperwork (she is purposely holding everyone up, she doesn't want us to test too early. But clearly, I can assure her that will not be the case with me)

Again, thanks for the feedback, you have been very helpful!
