I have a few question about travel nursing!

Hi every one! I'm a BSN student nurse. I am very interested in travel nursing, I love seeing new places! When you go on an assignment do you bring your car? How do you get to the hospital? Does the company pay for a rental car? Also, do you know if there is a pay difference between BSN nurses and ASN nurses? Do you find this way of nursing satisfying?

And ooh yeah, plan to work nights. Even when there are day positions open, many times the hospital will give a night staff nurse the day position, and offer you her night position. The only time this does not happen, is when the facility is desperate.

Well, that is unless you usually work nights!

No kidding.. I have worked evening/nights for 13 years before traveling and every other assignment has been DAY shift. Arizona #1 was nights... California was days... Arizona #2 was nights... Oklahoma was days... Mississippi was nights... Iowa was nights... Florida was nights for the first 13 weeks... now working for the same hospital nights.

Actually, I think that whatever shift you want... that is NOT the one that is available :) But "usually" night shift is going to be the one that is available.

Like the other's have said, experience is the big thing when traveling...not what degree you hold. If traveling is something you really desire then get the best experience you can after you get your license. My experience on both sides of the fence (being a traveler and hiring travelers)...the "quality" of the nurse's experience is crucial. For example, a nurse with 2 years experience in a rural hospital vs. a nurse with 2 years experience at say...Northwestern??? The nurse working at Northwestern will have a much more indepth level of experience than the rural nurse. As the others have stated, as a traveler you are expected to walk through the door and hit the ground running...so get the best and most intense experience possible before you sign on for your first assignment. If you have a solid knowledge and experience base, you'll do great!!!!

As far as shifts...while the night shift is generally the shift where a great deal of positions are posted...there are day and evening shifts as well...you just need to be open to different areas of the country, etc. My first travel assignment 7 years ago was a day shift position in a small hospital in North Carolina...since then I've done both day and nights...just depended on how badly I wanted to work in that area of the country. Remember, traveling is a great experience and it can be tailored to your specifications...good luck!

I am about to travel for the first time to Kona Hawaii, very nervous and excited at the same time. My biggest concern it is in a remote area and I have to rent a car which I found costs about 800.00 a month.Any unput on anything would be gratly appreciated.

I have bee traveling for the past 18 mos and love it. I have been in nursing for 14 yrs and most of my career I was working as a staff nurse. I loveee being a traveling nurse and you can learn alot about traveling through other travelers. Feel free to ask me any questions about it

I am getting ready to take my first assignment in Kona Hawaii. The only thing that worries me is that don't pay for a rental car and I have to pay for one, which will be around 800.00 a month. I will barely make anything after tht, any input would be greatly appreciated.

How long are you going to be there? It might be finance a used car and sell it back after your assignment is over.

Don't know about Kona but lots of "island cars". Travel nurses buy and sell them to each other all the time.. Ask you company to put you in touch with someone either the "dealer" or another nurse.

I thought I had sent a response to this yesterday... ??? (there I go again, pushing the wrong button)

When I was a Traveler in Hawaii, I was on the Island of Honolulu. There were rent a wreck type places where you could rent a car monthly etc... I do not know the fees but I do remember sharing a monthly pass for the bus. The bus went around the entire Island and was very cheap, like $ 20 or so.
