Do travel nurse agencies require local travel before state-to-state travel??

Hi all,

so, I'm planning to start traveling in March. I have a couple of co-workers who are getting ready to travel right now, and two of them were told that they needed to have local travel experience first. They both have more than 2 yrs ER experience, and one has her CEN. I was wondering if anyone else has heard anything like this. I really want to start in March and I don't want any snags when I'm ready. Do share!

No, you are not required to have "local" travel first. If you're planning on a March start for your first travel assignment I suggest putting away some money, like a couple months expenses if you have car or house payments or credit card debt. You don't want to quit your full-time guaranteed hours job unless you can afford to. Depending on your specialty you can get a travel job. Be open to location - they'll be a job out there. First job in your home state will be a plus, unless you're in a state that's part of the nursing compact. Back to what your friends have heard, there are some hospitals that look with travelers who are not first timers. But many will take you for a first time.
