Better to Have a Specialty for Traveling?

I've heard that traveling as a med/surg nurse can be pretty bad and it is better to have a specialty. My background is med/surg and I'm itching to travel...... What do those of you with experience think?

Well, I traveled with a critical care specialty. I don't think it matters. If you like being a med-surg nurse and want to travel, travel as a med-surg nurse. I personally would consider med-surg nursing as a specialty. Call and talk with a recruiter for a company you are interested in working with and ask them about jobs for med-surg vs other specialties. I know some companies do pay more for critical care jobs.

Sum up- do what you like. If you want to learn a new specialty, then do it...travel later. If you want to travel now..go for it.

I'm a med/surg traveler and there's plenty of travel positions out there. No trouble with finding one. And med/surg is actually considered a specialty. It depends on what traveling company is chosen. If you go with American Mobile or Cross Country Travel Corps then you're more likely to find a position in every state. If you go with a smaller company then positions may be limited.
