UTHSC-Houston Fall 2012 Applicants

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello everyone! This thread is for everyone applying to the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. I believe they will be accepting applications from January 15-April 1, so the sooner the better! Their admission requirements are pretty standard:

Minimum Pre-Req Gpa: 2.75

Minimum Science Gpa: 3.0

Minimum HESI A2 score: 75% or higher on all required sections - math, reading comprehension, vocabulary/general knowledge, grammar, anatomy and physiology, critical thinking.

My info is really not that competitive, but I'm going to give it a shot anyways -

Pre-Req Gpa: 3.30

Science Gpa: 3.0 (Barely cutting it! :crying2: )

Overall Gpa: 3.28

Hesi score: 93.3% overall, with my lowest score being a 90.

My gpa is not the best, but I still have 3 more classes to finish this semester, and I'm aiming for all A's! I think the best thing I have going for me is my HESI scores.

Anyone else planning on applying? What are your stats? Any questions? Lets hear them, and good luck to all who are applying!

Today I went to the information seminar. I just don't know what to think at this point..... They seem to have many benefits and I still have my heart set on attending there though. They informed us on many things. I will list some of it below, and if anyone has questions, please don't hesitate to post on here or msg me.

Some of the information I was able to get was very informative.... They said that

* The number of applicants for the Fall 2012 was around 600.

* They will send out letters no later than April 15th, and that the UT Link should change, but that it may not change till April, but that regardless of if your link doesn't change, if you get a letter, well obviously ;)

* That to be competitive your HESI CT should atleast be 800, and that each section of the HESI should be atleast 80%.

* When looking at the applications, they like to see that you have been going to school full time, or had (if your done) because they want to be sure that you can handle the work load. It is not a deal breaker they said, but is DEFINATELY looked at.... they have found that students who haven't gone full time have a higher attrition rate.

* They look at only your Pre-req GPA and Science GPA.... If you retake classes, they use the most frequent grade when calculating.

* To stand out on your application they want to see a GPA of 3.2 and even in some cases as high as a 3.5 (depends on the applicant pool). Once again they look at if you accomplished these grades as Full time or Part time.

* Can only take the HESI 2x's EVER, not over a length of time, but EVER..... And if you want to retake a section, you MUST retake the WHOLE test again.

* Your pre-req classes do not matter when they were taken, they do not expire, but they do PREFER that your sciences have been within the last 5 years.

* Clinicals are held in the Medical Center, Katy area, Woodlands, NW area, etc... So they are all over. They are 12 hour shifts, and you work the shift your assigned nurse works, so you could end up on nights....

* Classes are usually on Mon/Tues/Some on Wed

* Anything less than a 75 in their eyes is failing, and you must pass the exit exam at the end of each semester (but you have 3 attempts to pass)

* NCLEX pass rate for the students who graduated last spring was 98%, higher than TX overall pass rate of 88%.

I hope that this information is helpful. :)

nice job @Hemphia!!!! I was there too :) Was that you asking all those questions [i mean, the one other than me :) ??? ] I can add a couple more things:

* the past accepting rate was about 80 applicants in the spring, 60 - summer, 150 - fall

* the accelerated BSN program is basically the same, except it starts in the summer. also, since it starts in the summer the sessions are shorter (12 weeks vs. 16 weeks); thus more challenging

* consideration into the accelerated program is random, but based on a previous bachelors; those not accepted into the accelerated program are automatically considered for the traditional program

* the program is 4 concurrent semesters with no break (that means, sessions include summer)

* some semesters have 2 clinicals, which run the whole semester (opposed to split half/half)

* estimated cost of the entire program is $about 16K - $17K (scholarship info will be sent after acceptances go out)

* students who have taken pathophysiology can petition for equivalency, but doesn't guarantee that they will accept the credits

By the way, I don't travel downtown around that time, and it was my first time in the 2 years I've lived here, and boy what an experience. From Tomball, it took about an hour and a half. Yikes! I'm gonna have to figure out a better way, route getting there if/when blah blah blah...

For those of you who haven't been down to visit the school, the closest parking garage is Garage 2. For the time I was there, it cost $8.

Hope that helps! Still waiting for that transcript eval!!! Good luck everyone :)

THANKS!!! Hehehehehe - Yes that was me asking the bazillion questions in the front! lol I came to that session with a purpose in mind, and I was planning on getting ALL my questions answered!!! How did you like my question about learning styles? I think that threw her for a loop ;) Oops!

I drive in from the 288 area, and it took me about 30-ish minutes with traffic. This time I parked in the parking garage at Memorial Herman, and I paid $5, but they have a sign that says only for visitors and patients.... well technically today I was a "visitor".... But if we get accepted I was told there is the rail, and that they will bus students around as well. I forget the name of the site I was told to go to, but I believe she said that it is about $60 a month to use.

Below are a few things I forgot to mention as well......

* Financial aid - They said to go ahead and apply for FAFSA, and this way your already prepped if your admitted and you can start the process for loans and scholarships!

* If you applied for the traditional then you can be placed into the pacesetter program. Unfortunately at this time you CANNOT chose which program you want.... They said that in the future they may allow students to choose if they would like to be considered, but until then it is COMPLETELY random.

I had a feeling it was you :) I didn't think I was going to ask as many questions as I did. At one point I felt like I was waving a flag... That was a great question about learning styles. After that, I was gonna ask how much that really plays into the acceptance, considering there is no interview process anymore (I didn't coz in my head, the phrasing sounded obnoxious, so I held back. hehehehe).

The one thing that I'm glad that Dr. McEwen mentioned is that in regards to clinicals, they make every effort to work with you in the placement/choices. With these gas prices, I really hope that's true!

I have to look into that rail system at some point. Or car pools. Or maybe I'll invade my sister's home in West U.!

@ Hemphia, just curious. What was your question about learning styles and what did they say?

@hemphia did you apply to nursing school last sys?

Hey am new to this forum, have applied also to the bsn program at uthsc but i have a question, my UTH still shows hesi scores initiated, I have called the school of nursing several times and they said they have my scores and i will be considered for admission but my UTH Still have not changed to complete..am so confused. I called the registrar he said the school of nursing has not sent my hesi scores to them.I have recieved my transcript evaluation.

Hi everyone,

After reading this message board for months, I have finally decided to join. I applied to UTHSC, UTMB and TWU for the Fall of 2012, and am so incredibly nervous to find out if I get accepted! My background and degrees are in architecture, but I recently decided to return to school for nursing. My stats are as follows:

First Undergraduate GPA: 3.484

First Graduate GPA: 4.0

Nursing Prerequisite GPA: 3.9

Science GPA: 4.0

HESI: 92.23%

@Hemphia: Thank you so much for all your posts! They have been incredibly helpful and reassuring. I hope, after reading your post following the information session, that I have a good chance of getting in!

hey yall! I'm back :) I was already accepted last semester, but I thought I would be travelling to India for 6 months so I turned down the opportunity. However my boyfriend and I changed our minds about India so I re-applied for this semester and hopefully I get in.

Retook my Hesi to get a higher critical thinking score. My results:

95% overall 880 on critical thinking. Lowest score was A&P with 88%

Pre-reqs- 3.9

Science- 4.0

undergrad - 3.6

Currently taking Pharmacology at HCC and accepted to their Fall 2012 program. Hopefully I get UT-H though.

Springhopeful- my question was basically asking if they felt that certain learning styles do better in the program. She answered that some do better than others in some areas but then they may be weaker in other areas. She said it is better to be rounded.

Saraiish - I did not apply last semester. This is my first attempt at trying to get into a BSN program. I'm hoping this will be my only time to have to apply. Julianne_Rader - Your welcome. I wish everybody good luck.

Hi encephalon7! Just a quick question, did you study anything in particular to improve your critical thinking score? Thanks.

Good luck getting accepted again this semester! :-)
