Places to live near Seton hospital in Austin

U.S.A. Texas

Does anyone know of good locations to live that are near, or no more than a 20-30mintue commute to Seton Hospital in Austin?

I would be renting an apartment for a while.

Thanks!

Which one of Seton's hospitals?

im also interested.

something near or in between Seton Medical Center and Dell Childrens.

I plan to work NICU at both places.

Both hospitals are central, so, in general, rents won't be as cheap as they would be in the 'burbs.

Off the top of my head, I'd say look in areas with zip codes 78701, 78703, 78701, 78756, 78757, 78746. There are some areas in East Austin that are up-and-coming, like in the 78702 area. I'd stay away from the northeast and southeast sides of town. These areas have the higher crime rates.

Depending on the time of day you go to work, it's possible you could live farther out.

If your going to work at Dell Children's you might want to look at the Mueller development (it's basically the entire area surrounding the hospital http://www.muelleraustin.com). It will probably be pricey to rent there, but the area is designed to be able to work, live, shop, etc without having to drive often. Avoiding traffic is worth it in my opinion.

I used to live in 78752. That is close to Dell Children's. There are areas that are very nice in that zip code and there are areas that need improvement. I owned a house in a very cute neighborhood. I lived there with my kids for six years and felt very safe. That said, I would have never sent them to the schools over there. I also lived in 78751 (Hyde Park) and my care was broken into on a regular basis despite being a safe, nice neighborhood.

thx, but I already have that website. Last I checked the Mosaic at Mueller is not going to open until fall 2008. they do not specify a month. the good thing is that the complex will only be 2 blocks away from dell childrens. i could potentially save over $200 a month on gas! perhaps more due to everything being within "walkin" distance. :D

thanks for the other advice as well. i really do like the area. i had a tour of the hospital last month and i was looking at the surrounding area. i will be goin back this friday and hunt for apartments. i guess the closer to DCMC the better. i rather pay more in rent, instead of sitting in my car during traffic.

thanks again. i will check out zip 78752.

I would be working at Brackenridge. What locations are good to look at rent an apartment from? What about the NW area?

Thanks!

Brack is a little more difficult because it's so close to UT so you are going to find lots of expensive apts and tons of college kids (which wouldn't be so bad if you're young and single!) Because it's downtown you can pretty much live anywhere outlying and the commute won't be too bad. I would suggest saying closer in to downtown though so you don't have to fight traffic. The Congress Ave area is really cool. If you live in south Austin you'll get a little more of that "Austin flair" than you will if you live near UT or up north.

When I was a student, I really liked living in Hyde Park (78751) but there did seem to be a few suspicious people floating around on occasion. My last semester I lived over off of Far West (78731) and LOVED IT. The area has a good mix of regular residents and older studens and had the suburban feel. I worked 7a-7p at Seton and the commute was about 15-20 from leaving my door until I arrived on the unit, but there seemed to be lots of traffic when I would be coming home so it would take a little more time for 7p-7a. I agree with the poster who said to avoid southeast (yes riverside included) and northeast. Another area I looked into was the Arboretum area. I also liked the area but opted to pay a little more in rent to be closer to the city.
