New Graduate Nurse having trouble finding job in Dallas

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hi,

I am a Graduate Nurse with a BSN (as of last Saturday) and I just moved from Kansas City to North Dallas. When I looked online before moving, I saw many nursing jobs, so I thought I would have no problem finding one. I was not expecting all of the hospitals to have Internships that don't start until January- we don't have those in KC. So now my problem is that I can't find somewhere to work until January, and that is too long to wait. The only hospital I have found that doesn't have Internships is the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, and I submitted my application and called them last week. Does anyone know of any other hospitals that I could possibly get hired at without waiting until January? I'd appreciate any suggestions! I'd love to work in the ER, but I am also happy with any other hospital area.

Thanks,

Katie

It's not in anyone's best interest to move without a job, there is no guarantee of finding one in Dallas. I just got off the phone with Parkland's nurse recruiter and she says that all Nurse Resident and Graduate Nurse positions have been filled (I don't know how since there have been some recently added, but whatever) and that it is up to the managers to get back on the system and deny applications out.

I am sooo frustrated. But things are looking up... Parkland opened up 2 RN residencies for L&D and ED. I cannot wait to remove Indeed & other job searching website from my "FAVORITES"... argh.

Many RNs who have difficulty landing hospital employment are usually quite sucessful at landing positions in home health, long-term care, rehab, and other non-hospital jobs. My facility hires graduate BSNs regularly before they have gained initial licensure and offers them much higher pay than that of the local hospitals. The starting pay of BSNs without an RN license is $23 hourly with an increase after licensure. You might want to work a non-hospital job until something 'better' comes along. By the way, we're both in the Metroplex. I could give you the names and numbers of places that are in need of RNs in a private message if you are interested.

Hi TheCommuter,

I am in the Metroplex too and have difficulties finding a job. I would greatly appreciate your help with a list of places that need RNs now. I have combined home health and LTC/SNF experience of 1 year.

Thanks

You quoted a post of mine that was made back in 2006. The job market was much more robust and welcoming 5 years ago. I have not worked at that particular facility since February 2008. The facilities that were freely hiring nurses several years ago have all tightened their belts as the economic situation changed.

You can also expect 1,000+ new nurses to apply for the 2 residencies since L&D and the ER are two extremely coveted specialties being offered at one hugely popular hospital.
