New grad BSN salary in DFW

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I'm inquiring about the salary for new grad BSN RNs in the DFW area. I'm trying to work out a budget, but without a job offer that's a little difficult. I've heard ranges from people in the past but I was wondering what it was currently. I've worked up several options for income but I'd like to just narrow the gap for my own sanity. I'm trying to not get lost in my student loans and want to prepare ahead of time. If anyone has any input, I'd greatly appreciate it!!

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Most major hospital systems in the D/FW area are paying new grads between $23 and $25 per hour. Home health, LTC, hospice, psych, private duty, and other specialties outside the hospital tend to pay significantly more.

I just got excepted in nursing school so, I have been doing some checking where I work.most of our new grads make $23 at an HCA hospital. I have worked psych for 5 years as a tech but I never realized psych nurses made more.

Accepted* sorry watching a movie when I wrote that.

This is actually very sad. . .wages are definitely stagnating and remaining flat.

I've been in the D/FW area for about 8 years. Most area hospitals were paying new grad RNs between $23 and $25 hourly in 2008. It is now 2013 and the same hospital systems are still offering new grad RNs between $23 and $25 hourly (BSN preferred).

Specializes in Neuro/EMU, Pediatrics, Med Surg.

Look into smaller, physician owned hospitals. I work for Presby Hospital and they pay RN's $32/hour to start. I am currently a PCT there and have just applied to spring nursing programs.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the response yall, that helps a lot! I'm currently looking for just an internship that will accept me into their program, it makes it hard just graduating in the summer. Most hospitals don't seem to be ready for us summer grads. If anyone has any suggestions on where else I can apply with current openings or how I can get an interview, I'm all ears!!

I am a summer grad as well! I have had 3 total interviews for new grad internships at large hospitals in the DFW area. I have been offered 1, not offered 1 and am awaiting news on the other one. I have been unable to find any hospitals that will hire new grads out of formal internships other than Baylor. The people I know who got hired at Baylor out of the internship had inside contacts, though. BUMC has an internship that was still available last week for Telemetry - if you are interested I would be happy to give you the name of the recruiter.

The offer I received was $24.50/hr while in the internship and then $26/hr after with differentials of $3 evening, $4 nights, $5.50 weekends. This is for a critical care position.

Our career advisor suggested going to more rural hospitals and getting jobs as techs while awaiting formal internships next year. The job market is tough! The internships I applied to and interviewed had applications posted for less than a week! Good luck :)

If you have a RN license they can't (won't) hire you as a tech.

Practicing at a level below what your licensed at is a liability for an employer and I don't know of any that would do that.

I am an ER tech right now and as soon as my license # posts I can't work as a tech anymore (well, once my boss finds out that is). Not a problem since I have an RN position waiting for me.

It actually depends on the hospital and manager about having a license and working as a tech. Many people are doing this in my program - their manager and hospital know that they will briefly be a graduate nurse and then an RN while employed as a tech. It is at their own discretion and liability. Once you have an RN, I do not think they will hire you though. You need to get in as a tech before becoming licensed.

What BSN program did y'all graduate from?

I graduated from TCU
